Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Hard to believe? I believe it!
Revisado: 01-20-24
I was in the middle of this book and thought “Does the stuff really happen? Are women really sexually assaulted that much in the workplace?” Then, that very day, my brother, who is a lawyer, told me that he had just been fired from his job. The head, lawyer, he was working under was arrogant and incapable, and was continuously sexually harassing the other female lawyer in the office. He went to the higher ups many time about it. Instead of firing the man at fault, they fired the woman who was sexually harassed and my brother.
This book was a grand reminder that we are so capable as humans. That change is essential to growth. Please read it to your husband, sons, daughters and grandchildren (that are old enough to understand). Thank you Bonnie Garmus!

Historia
What if we understood faith crisis as part of a natural cycle of spiritual growth, a breaking open to make room for new life and new faith? In the new book Navigating Mormon Faith Crisis, Thomas McConkie draws on the study of adult development to provide a map for people who find themselves in faith crisis, fearing they might have taken a wrong turn in their spiritual progression.

Historia
We congratulate ourselves when we resist the donut in the office breakroom. We celebrate our restraint when we hold back from sending an email in anger. We feel virtuous when we wake up at dawn to get a jump on the day. We put others’ needs ahead of our own and believe this makes us exemplary. In On Our Best Behavior, journalist Elise Loehnen explains that these impulses—often lauded as unselfish, distinctly feminine instincts—are actually ingrained in us by a culture that reaps the benefits, via an extraordinarily effective collection of mores known as the Seven Deadly Sins.

We must continue this conversation
Revisado: 08-10-23
This book beautifully shows us that we must begin questioning how we do things now, and how we have always done things. That it is time for the feminine and masculine to come together, and all of us, that we must ask ourselves and each other. What is the ideal way for men and women to collaborate right now, and in the future. This book helps us start that conversation.

Historia
Intellectuals and Race is a radical book in the original sense - one that goes to the root of the problem. The role of intellectuals in racial strife is explored in an international context that puts the American experience in a wholly new light. The book explores the incentives, the visions, and the rationales that drive intellectuals at the highest levels to conclusions that have often turned out to be counterproductive and even disastrous, not only for particular racial or ethnic groups but for societies as a whole.

Written to and about the intelligencia, very partisan
Revisado: 08-27-22
I disliked the narrow mindedness, limited by economics lens. Very little recognition of a need and solution. He is not building creating or collaborating. This is a negating criticism of the “Left’s” approach to the problem. As it is, it contributes that view point, though clumsily if at all regarding any recognition of legitimacy for those who purport to have a grievances, needs, or concerns about race. But this is typical of political posturing. I hope for better in the future. It was still good to read if only to realize the gap that exists between opposing perspectives and to begin considering how we might work together to not just understand that we are in opposition but to start to tease out a third option that can be implemented beyond just government or the market and that reaches out to the cultural needs in that space.

Historia
When the great red star Calamity appeared in the sky, some believed the end had come. They were right. Calamity created the Epics: humans with incredible powers they didn't deserve. They could have saved mankind. They could have lifted us into harmony and prosperity. Instead they burned. They slaughtered. They conquered. And then they ruled. Jax has learned all of this the hard way. Orphaned at an early age, he's spent most of his childhood training to be a Reckoner - determined to find the Epics' weaknesses, unlock their secrets, and protect those of us who are still left.

I usually love Brandon Sanderson
Revisado: 09-13-21
This the first book I did not enjoy. The book seemed to have no objective or deeper theme. It was a little depressing, almost as though he had reopened a closed wound but for no reason. To be honest, the style of the Reckonor series has been my least favorite. But this one somehow did not capture the essence of a Sanderson page turner. I do like the idea of co-writing with others but I think when done well it will have a new flare that couldn’t be done through Sanderson alone, not an attempt at more of the same. Sanderson had upped the Annie foe each book in the series and this didn’t do that. The book needed to explore the deeper source of the powers themselves or something. If it did this I missed it.
