Tedious plot, wooden characters.
Revisado: 05-14-22
if I didn't know that Perry had written other books, I would have pegged this as an amateur effort. Completely unrealistic premise and setting. Characters are about as developed as a set of Old Maid cards. And all throughout, the dog goes "woof" over and over again. The plot is uninteresting and ridiculous. No need to follow this series.

It's sadly a poor attempt to keep MC Beaton going.
Revisado: 01-08-22
The narration by Penelope Keith was as always, superb. However, no narration could make up for this appalling attempt to write a Agatha Raisin mystery. I've read every Agatha Raisin mystery, and this is so jarringly off that I believe it would have been better to have ended the series with the last book. Long stretches of tedious exposition and a ho-hum, ridiculous plot were so disappointing. The characters felt flat and forced, and the dialogue was not true to their well-established patterns. I cannot believe that MC Beaton would have approved of this book.

Historia
Returning from an extended leave, Detective Tracy Crosswhite finds herself reassigned to the Seattle PD’s cold case unit. As the protective mother of an infant daughter, Tracy is immediately drawn to her first file: the abduction of a five-year-old girl whose parents, embattled in a poisonous divorce, were once prime suspects. While reconstructing the days leading up to the girl’s disappearance, Tracy is brought into an active investigation with former partner Kinsington Rowe. A young woman has vanished on an isolated jogging trail in North Seattle.

Disappointing, intrusive product placement
Revisado: 04-30-21
I pre-ordered and waited excitedly for this latest installment of the Tracy Crosswhite series.
The story was pretty weak, compared to previous novels in the series. I rarely figure out the plot before the end, but this time I had it before the book was half over. It seemed like there just was no 'glue' between the elements. The familiar characters we've known were shoehorned in as one dimensional parodies of themselves.
The most disappointing aspect was the relentless product placement references. I know this is a common practice in movies, but I rarely find it takes away from the viewing experience. In this novel, it was clunky and ham-handed. In fact, I don't recall another novel I have read or listened to that had more than one mention of a brand. And it wasn't just big, well-known companies (e.g, Verizon). For example, instead of saying the character pulled on gloves, the author says specifically 'N-dex' gloves (I worked in a lab so know the brand). Altogether, the product placement references are distracting and add nothing to the story. Again, very disappointing.
If you really want to read this, I recommend waiting for your local library--I really wish I had not spent money on it.

Worst cozy mystery ever!
Revisado: 04-15-21
The narrator's voice is whining and she cannot approximate male voices at all. The story reads as though someone is using a paint-by-numbers guide to a cozy mystery. Trite and unsympathetic protagonist. All other characters wooden and one dimensional.

The infamous Dodd murders are hardly among Eastport's proudest legacies. So when bestselling true-crime author Carolyn Rathbone arrives to research the case for a new book, the locals in the seaside town let her know that she's about as welcome as a spoiled clam. But surely no one would harm a crime writer out of a sense of civic pride--or would they?

Really beyond credibility...ham-fisted plot
Revisado: 12-02-20
While the narration is flawless and compelling, the story was one ridiculous scene after another. It was a an unending series of 'gotcha' moments interspersed with tedious stream-of-consciousness interior monologues. And it's hard to feel much more than frustration with a plot that is hammered at you with heavy melodrama. And finally,I found it ridiculous that Jake *again* loses her weapon because she still doesn't have a proper holster! She claims her husband is an expert who has schooled her in how to use a weapon, yet this is a glaring oversight.
