Historia
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Too graphic for my taste
Revisado: 01-06-25
Lots of gratuitous violence. I don’t mind violence if it moves the story, but it was like watching a slasher movie. Not my cup of tea. Couldn’t continue. Returned it.

Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Good but…
Revisado: 12-27-24
I have a mixed review here. While I love the story, it’s got a great premise and what’s a great fantasy book without dragons? I found the female lead, Violet, to be whiny and at times was annoyed by her. This may have been due to the way the reader portrayed her or just how the character is written in the book. That’s one thing about audiobooks, is some of the character’s personality is up to the way the reader reads their dialog to give them personality, so it may not have been entirely the character’s fault. The other thing that I didn’t like about this book was the gratuitous graphic depiction of the sex scenes. I’m sure many people read this series just for that reason, however, I would put this book in the category young adult, and for that it was just over the top descriptive. Not sure I would like my 14 or 15 year-old daughter to be reading this. Overall, I think it’s worth a read (listen), but be aware it does get very spicy in parts.

Story was good, but…
Revisado: 12-03-24
So this is book 14 in the series, and although I’m thoroughly enjoying it, I’m wondering if there is ever going to be an ending. One thing that I’ve always enjoyed about books and even series of books is that eventually they have a conclusion some are satisfying, some are not but after the adventure, there is some sort of closure. I’m not quite sure where the author is taking the series, but at the end of almost every book there’s an opening to continue indefinitely.
I keep wondering how many more books it would take to wrap up all the loose ends for all of the side stories in the series, or even if the intention is to ever wrap up the series, but I just don’t want it to get to the point where I don’t care anymore and lose interest.
I truly enjoy all of the stories, again, some more than others, but just when I think we may have a “conclusion“ to one thread, the story turns so that if the author wanted to, they could continue that storyline.
Just to be clear, I am not saying that this is not worth listening to. I have been entertained since book one. I just don’t want the series to have to jump the shark to conclude.

Historia
The Grand Hotel is a horror novel by esteemed best-selling author Scott Kenemore ( Zombie, Ohio) that takes the reader on a thrilling ride through an interconnected series of stories narrated by the desk clerk and the residents of the hotel itself. And while it is not known whether or not the desk clerk is actually the devil incarnate, it is strange that so many visitors who come for a tour of the hotel have a way of never leaving.

Held your attention and the ending, well…
Revisado: 11-08-24
I enjoyed this book. I thought that it was interesting and it did hold my attention through the whole thing. I do have to say that even if you do think you know what’s going to happen, you don’t. The stories in the book are a little bit strange, but they are well done. The book was just creepy enough, but not abject horror. I think it is worth a listen.

Good piece of brain candy
Revisado: 10-30-24
I enjoyed this book. I was looking for something to hold me over while I wait for the next in another series. The book reminded me of “On a Pale Horse” by Piers Anthony which I enjoyed so I gave it a listen. The story moved at a good pace and the character were likable. Overall it’s not a great piece of literature but it is a fun romp and worth a read.

Beach read at best
Revisado: 10-21-24
This story had a few pros and a few cons.
Pros:
The reader was pretty talented and moved the story along.
There was a lot of description throughout the story, some places it was helpful in other places, fluff.
The story had a definite beginning, middle and end.
The climax of the story was exciting but short lived.
Cons:
I felt that the story was slow. Nothing really happened until about 3/4 of the book.
Sometimes the description was a little too much.
The character that the book is named after had very little to do with the story which I found a little bit confusing.
Once the story did get moving, it was over very quickly so kind of anti-climactic.
While I didn’t dislike this book, it would not be the first one I would recommend to someone else. As I said in my review title, might be good for a beach read, or as a filler if you’re waiting for the next book in your favorite series.

Pain, horror, fear - these are the things that have comprised best-selling novelist Lance Metzger's life. His childhood remains a riddled wasteland of abuse by a sadistic father and abandonment by an apathetic mother. In turn his only refuge became his writing. When Lance loses his ability to write and becomes haunted by a nightmare that he'd thought was buried, he is drawn inexplicably to a house on the shores of Lake Superior, where he finds his muse once again - but something is waiting for him when he arrives.

Overall I enjoyed the book. There were a few spots where I had to think about who a character actually was, but it was overall well done. The reader was also pleasant to listen to and did a good job with the story.
