A fantastic book with rich characters and great dialogue. Gave me a new perspective on the central issue of the book, which I was very grateful for as I've never understood it before. Excellent performances too.

Great multi layered characters and unique story. I found just a few moments unbelievable and frustrating but overall was a great read and the performance was the best I've heard on audible. I read a negative review about the writing being sophomoric - I completely disagree. I found it beautifully simple (ie not flowery or overwritten which I dislike) with some very poignant turns of phrases and imagery. I think the author of that negative review must prefer more convoluted writing styles, or was just being petty - this definitely deserves to be a best seller.

I enjoyed this - easy to read, twisty and unpredictable storyline (for me anyway!), I like Max Rupert as a character- will be on the look out for more of his story.

A book with a clear philosophy, well expressed. Listened to this on holiday and can't wait to apply Marie's system when I get home. The only thing that might put some off is how she personifies inanimate objects. If you can't handle that then you're probably not ready for this book! But as someone who has always done a mass tidy and despaired how quickly everything becomes cluttered again, this book taught me a lot about where I've been going wrong. Thanks Marie :)

Would you listen to Playing Big again? Why?

Yes I'm already on my second listen and I brought the paperback too so I could refer to the journalling questions. Every now and then I come across a book that makes a huge impact on me and this is one. I will be referring back to it many times I'm sure, and I have already recommended it to many friends.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Playing Big?

Identifying the Inner Critic has been the biggest moment for me so far but I still have work to do. I love how Tara doesn't just talk about the theory of an Inner Critic but also gives you real practical tools for identifying and characterising that voice so that you can be more aware of your default self-criticisms and what they really mean.

Which scene was your favorite?

The Inner Critic chapter and the Inner Mentor chapter are mind blowing; plus the chapter on the two different types of Fear and also Leaping.

What insight do you think you’ll apply from Playing Big?

I have already applied many of the breakthroughs I've had to my personal and professional life; particularly in taking Leaps, and unhooking from Praise and Criticism. I was also surprised by many things I learnt from exploring my Inner Critic and Inner Mentor -and this process has helped me approach pretty much everything in my life with more calm and a greater compassion for myself.

Any additional comments?

I'm so grateful I found this book. If you struggle with self doubt, uncertainty with your purpose or anxiety about feedback then I am certain this book will help you, especially if you are a woman. It is smart, practical and also has a nice balance of spiritual content. I recommend it to anyone.

What did you love best about The Girl on the Train?

The characters were full and interesting and the writing was good - flowed well. The twists were slightly predictable but I didn't mind, I still enjoyed it.

What other book might you compare The Girl on the Train to and why?

Although not as good, it did remind me of Gone Girl - in the way that we are in the flawed character's brains and in the prose that feels poetic at times.

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Great performances, no annoying voices - a really enjoyable listen.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes I did find it hard to "put down"

If you could sum up NOS4A2 in three words, what would they be?

Scary As Hell

What other book might you compare NOS4A2 to and why?

Some of Stephen King's scariest.. Joe Hill can paint a creepy scene much like his Dad.

What about Kate Mulgrew’s performance did you like?

Great character work - good with suspense filled scary moments.

If you could take any character from NOS4A2 out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I loved the character of Lou - it was refreshing to read about an obese character who wasn't comical or written with a tone of disgust or pity - he was a dude with a great heart and I thought he was very realistic and genuinely likeable despite his failings.

Any additional comments?

This book reads like some of my worst nightmares in places - scary kids and creepy Xmas carols.. I only listened to it in the day time! Great work by Joe Hill.

If you could sum up Spark in three words, what would they be?

Original, Smart, Slow

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The ending was fairly satisfying - I wanted more of a fairytale ending but that probably wouldn't have suited the story. I would also like a sequence to see what happens to the characters next. The climax showdowns were well written and rewarding.

What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?

He nailed it. He portrayed the different characters very well. In the slow points I may have given up but I quite enjoyed listening to the tone of his voice.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No

Any additional comments?

I thought some sequences were unnecessary and dragged the story when I wanted to get to the point where he spent time with Emily. That could've happened sooner for me - I didn't need so much back story on his character. He was an interesting character - I like the way he sees details as colours. Supporting characters were great too, Ms Holquist especially. I would definitely read a sequel to this.
