I listened to all eight books in this series, and what really stands out—aside from the consistent quality—is the tone. While the world is dark and the stakes are high, the main character never turns cold or detached like you often see in this genre. Think Hunger Games, but with a heroine who stays thoughtfully kind, even when it would be easier not to be. She’s committed to helping others, not just surviving, which gives the story a sense of purpose and warmth you don’t usually get in dystopian fiction.

The plot stays tightly focused across all eight books, with no time jumps or meandering. Each book picks up right where the last leaves off, and the story stays centered on real stakes, expanding the world building, and momentum. If you liked Book One, you can trust the rest to deliver.

I wasn’t sure what to expect going into The Collapse—especially when I saw it was a time travel story. That usually sends up a red flag for me; I tend to avoid anything that makes me do mental gymnastics just to follow the plot. But this one? It just flows. The time travel here isn’t a convoluted gimmick—it’s a narrative tool that lets you see the same events and people from different angles and understand each character’s unique perspective and motivation. That might sound like it could get repetitive, but it never does. It’s surprisingly easy to follow, and even more surprising in how well it works.

Yes, the core premise is far-fetched—but I really appreciated that the book doesn’t try to stretch itself across continents or spiral off into chaos theory. It stays focused on a small group of characters and just a couple of buildings in Seattle. That narrow scope is a real strength. Instead of endless exposition or sprawling global stakes, you get tight, character-driven storytelling that gradually widens out at a pace that makes sense.

If you’re skipping the blurb, here’s the gist: The Collapse follows a handful of people in the aftermath of a cataclysmic event. Something massive and world-changing has happened, and in the ruins of modern life, a limited form of time travel allows a few people to revisit moments just before the collapse. But only certain individuals can do it—and the use of it is highly restricted.

Penelope Wright’s narration is excellent. I had just finished her Queen Trials series and was happy to find another series where she narrates her own work.

This is science fiction, but the emphasis is on the fiction. The science is there to introduce narrative curves and add dimension to the characters’ perspectives—not to be the centerpiece. The speculative elements support the story rather than overpower it.

Cleo Stays Focused, and So Does This Series

In Kingdom of Lies, Cleo returns from the war zone to continue the Queen Trials at the Rotunda. There are new twists, unexpected turns, and a few intriguing new characters to learn about. This book stays true to the tone of the series, and I mean that in the best way possible. The characters continue to develop in meaningful ways, and I find them getting better with each installment. One of the standout changes in this book is Cleo’s ‘mother,’ who becomes a much more interesting character—one who finally seems poised to take a more active role in helping Cleo achieve her end goal.

I was initially worried this series might veer into a typical romance storyline, but it has stayed refreshingly focused. Cleo remains laser-focused on her mission, making allies and enemies along the way while continuing to learn more about the world she’s fighting to change. She doesn’t waste time crying over her past or getting distracted by a love interest in the middle of a life-or-death crisis. Instead, she stays selfless, determined, and hopeful throughout, which makes her a fantastic protagonist to follow.

I do wish the author would fill in more of the world’s history and lore, but I’m hopeful that will come with time—either in future books in this series or in her other works, which I’ll definitely be reading as soon as I finish this one. I’m officially a HUGE fan.

If you’re looking for a light, fast-paced, and highly entertaining read, this is a great choice. It has a Selection Series meets Hunger Games vibe (leaning more toward The Selection), but with a slightly darker edge. Despite the high stakes, the story remains upbeat, with Cleo focused on her goal: killing the king and saving the other princesses—whether they realize they need saving or not.

I also love the unique voice of the main character, and the author does an excellent job narrating. Highly recommend!

This story has some similarities to a few stories from his, 'Miniatures: the very short fiction of John Scalzi', which was outstanding and felt singular in its creativity and approach.

This is about a woman starting a job where she works with all kinds of aliens. A great idea on the face of it but It's so light hearted that it practically evaporates before it even gets to your brain. I mean is that bad? depends on what you are looking for I guess.

The narration was very good and all of the voices were easy discernible.

Still Fantastic 3 Books In. Impressive!

The short version: I love how this book doesn’t stretch a few interesting storylines into a drawn-out three-book series. Instead, it delivers a concise, engaging narrative that keeps the pace brisk and the plot compelling.

Im happy about the world-building in this series and how it takes its time developing the storylines. It’s refreshing to find a book in this genre that’s PG-rated, which is rare and a welcome change. There’s almost no teen drama, and the characters exhibit real respect and fondness for each other, which enriches their interactions.

The main character can sometimes come across as a bit young and not overly wise, but this adds to the realism and helps the reader connect with the storylines.

There are plenty of intriguing plotlines happening simultaneously, and I’m finding it hard to pace myself and not rush through all the books. I’m devastated that Audible doesn’t have the 5th book—what a loss!

It doesn’t feel like the plot points are being unnecessarily dragged out. The resolutions are unpredictable, at least to me, but that’s part of the fun. I’m thoroughly enjoying both the day-to-day lives of the characters and the more adventurous elements, so it’s all working well together.

The narration is great!

Highly Recommend this series. I will be reading all of her other books in short order.
