Historia
When Elizabeth Vetch spots Bell for the first time in 17 years, she chases her down in order to learn why her old friend committed a terrible murder all those years ago. Bell has been in prison ever since the mysterious events that took place at the House of Stairs, a London mansion full of over-privileged, overstuffed, and somewhat sinister boarders, landed her there. Now it’s up to Lizzie to put together the pieces of her friend’s - and her own - fateful past.

The worst reader yet!
Revisado: 01-11-25
I am a big fan of Audible and an even bigger fan of Ruth Rendell. The reader of this story was so stilted, so stiff, so NOT English ( why on earth would anyone read a Rendell in an American accent?), so BAD. A boring and plodding rendition.
I only stuck it out to the end in order to write this review. I DON’T recommend this title or this “ reader” either.
I wasted a Credit !

Historia
When Dolly’s mother - her only friend - dies, 23-year-old Dolly becomes a second mom to her younger brother, Pup. Socially isolated and booze-addled, Dolly believes that Pup’s occult power, and a talisman he’s made for her, will give her the life she wants. But as Pup grows older and her father takes a new wife, her carefully constructed home begins to fall apart - and those around her begin to die. Is it coincidence, magic, or murder? With careful plotting and unnerving ease, Rendell delves into the inner life of an outcast.

Good Book - Bad Reader.
Revisado: 01-07-23
This intrinsically English novel, set in a very specific area of London, cries out for an English accent, at the very least. I love Rendell’s work, and this story is a favorite, but it was ruined - from the start - by the woman reading it. I lost count of how many mispronunciations there were … she completely missed the subtleties and nuances of Rendell’s beautifully drawn characters. Great book but please, use good actors!
