Historia
State and Revolution (1917) describes the role of the state in society, the necessity of proletarian revolution, and the theoretic inadequacies of social democracy in achieving revolution. It describes the inherent nature of the state as a tool for class oppression, a creation born of one social class' desire to control all other social classes. Whether a dictatorship or a democracy, the state remains in the control of the ruling class.

Historia
In an attempt to appeal to the Medici family during the Italian Renaissance, Machiavelli outlines the way to acquire and retain political power, and how great men should behave in a princely government. The book is divided into four parts - types of principalities and state, proper conduct of a prince as military leader, personal conduct of a prince, and the disparity of Italy's political situation. Many listeners will be able to see principals that Machiavelli advocates for are still used in many political systems today.

Historia
Experience a bold take on this classic autobiography as it’s performed by Oscar-nominated Laurence Fishburne. In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.

the myth, the legend.
Revisado: 09-29-20
I came into this book with mixed feelings. I had heard that Malcolm X was it an anti-white stochastic terrorist. and I also heard that he was a true civil rights activist.
after reading the book I believe that he was an intelligent passionate man, and a product of his environment. a complicated man, a great man, and a terrible man.
if you come into this book wanting to find an evil man, you will find him. but if you want to come into this book to find a good and honest man, you will find him too. and if you come in do this book objectively, you will find that his cause was just, and it's about time someone picked up his torch.

Not since the atomic bomb has a technology so alarmed its inventors that they warned the world about its use. Not, that is, until the spring of 2015, when biologist Jennifer Doudna called for a worldwide moratorium on the use of the new gene-editing tool CRISPR - a revolutionary new technology that she helped create - to make heritable changes in human embryos.

a good place to start.
Revisado: 08-13-19
the purpose of this book is to start a conversation on genetic engineering. though the author has her opinions, she doesn't defend them very strongly and mostly just talks about the technology of genetic engineering, its development, and potential implementation.
as you consider the negative possibilities of genetic engineering, I would ask that you consider if this new methodology is better or worse than the current methods of doing the same thing. yes, genetic engineering can be used in eugenics. but how is genetic engineering in eugenics any worse then the current methods of forced sterilization, and other forms of genocide in eugenics?
also compare cost to the current methods. for example in Brave New World the dictatorial dystopia described is just a more expensive Indian caste system. why would a dictatorial government resort to genetic engineering when traditional methods are much less expensive and just as effective?
when considering new technologies, remember that we already do the things these Technologies enable, these technologies will just change how we do them. so is the new way better than the old way?
I'm going to leave you with a quote from a military General being interviewed about the invention of a pain Ray, a device that just causes pain at range. the general was talking about how this device is a more effective and less dangerous form of non-lethal crowd control than our current methods of tear gas and rubber bullets. when the interviewer asked if this device could be used for torture. the general responded " the device cost $3000000, I can produce the same effect with a $0.05 pen knife. which do you think is more likely to be used in torture?"

Historia
An unimpeachable classic work in political philosophy, intellectual and cultural history, and economics, The Road to Serfdom has inspired and infuriated politicians, scholars, and the public for half a century. Originally published in 1944 - when Eleanor Roosevelt supported the efforts of Stalin, and Albert Einstein subscribed lock, stock, and barrel to the socialist program - The Road to Serfdom was seen as heretical for its passionate warning against the dangers of state control over the means of production.

If you are a socialist read this review first.
Revisado: 03-13-19
With the right mindset this book can be incredibly useful for today's socialists. But F. A. Hayek's non conciliatory language towards socialism is bound to trigger socialists and put them in a defensive mindset, which renders this book useless to socialists.
So to make this book useful to Socialists allow me to provide a little insight. F. A. Hayek noticed a troubling line of thought that was prominent among a lot of socialist in his day. He then defined socialism by this troubling line of thought. But this line of thought is not and never was Central to socialist ideology. Because of this F A Hayek has a flawed definition of socialism because by F A Hayek's definition of socialism most socialist countries today are not socialist, but all dictatorships are socialists, even the extremely anti-socialist ones.
But Hayek's assessment of the troubling line of thought that he observed is spot-on, and if you don't look out for it this troubling line of thought can infect any ideology.
As a socialist it is important that you recognize this troubling line of thought and ensure that it does not infect your socialist movement.

Historia
For much of his life, historian Howard Zinn chronicled American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official version taught in schools - with its emphasis on great men in high places - to focus on the street, the home, and the workplace. Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History of the United States is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of - and in the words of - America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers.

focused on the ignored history of America.
Revisado: 08-07-18
my only complaint is how Zin frames social progress as more intricate forms of control as opposed to the hard-won concessions of power that they are. If they were more intricate forms of control, then the establishment wouldn't be constantly trying to subtly undermine them while we aren't looking.
Other than that a great book that all true American Patriots should read.

Historia
In his 1936 book The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money, Keynes argued that traditional economics has misunderstood the causes of unemployment. Employment is not determined by the price of labor; it is directly linked to demand in the economy. Keynes believed market economies are by nature unstable and so require government intervention. Spurred on by the social catastrophe of the Great Depression of the 1930s, Keynes set out to change the way the world thinks about economics.

Each chapter felt like it was written by different person as much of the information was repeated from chapter to chapter. And none of the information presented gave me any insight on John Maynard Keynes's book. Let me save you some time and give you all the information that is in this book.
economic philosophy was dominated by the classical economic ideas presented by Adam Smith. then the Great Depression happened which classical economics said should be impossible. John Maynard Keynes wrote a book about it. some people hated it some people liked it. the end.
