How do you define yourself when others have already decided who you are? Six years ago, when Camden Daniels came back from war without his younger brother, no one in the small town of Alba, Colorado, would forgive him - especially his father. He left, swearing never to return. But a desperate message from his father brings it all back. The betrayal. The pain. And the need to go home again. But home is where the one person he still loves is waiting. Willow. The one woman he can never have. Because there are secrets buried in Alba that are best left in the dark.

I don’t listen to erotica
Revisado: 04-11-25
The very detailed sexual description —the story was enough without the graphic descriptions. I want to know what happens but I will not continue with this book

Historia
Neil White, a journalist and magazine publisher, wanted the best for those he loved - nice cars, beautiful homes, luxurious clothes. He loaned money to family and friends and invested in his community - but his bank account couldn't keep up. Soon White began moving money from one account to another to avoid bouncing checks. His world fell apart when the FBI discovered his scheme and a judge sentenced him to serve 18 months in a federal prison. But it was no ordinary prison. The beautiful, isolated colony in Carville, Louisiana, was also home to the last people in the continental United States disfigured by leprosy.

Scientific
Revisado: 01-21-12
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Yes, I would add some additional voices from people in the examples given of various types of addictions. I have a solid background in both neurobiology and addictions, and found myself (while interested in the material) zoning off because of the monotony of the speaker's voice. It needs some variety in voices to keep the listener's attention.
What other book might you compare The Compass of Pleasure to and why?
No other.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Great practical information. Too monotonous.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
no
Any additional comments?
This is not a book for an uninformed lay person without some background in neurology.

Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

Rich Characters Believable Performers
Revisado: 01-21-12
If you could sum up Water for Elephants in three words, what would they be?
Intense, Tumultuous, and Satisfying
Who was your favorite character and why?
Jacob was my favorite character because he was a blank slate, a young man without any options when the book begins. He narrates the story as an old man, recalling the early years when he first joined the troupe. Each chapter brings out more of the man he eventually becomes, a man full of integrity and faithfulness to his love for his family and the animals. My heart bled at times as I listened to his journey, and at times I laughed aloud and hoped for Jacob's life to be full of peace and joy.
Which scene was your favorite?
There are too many favorite scenes in this book to pick only one.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I wanted to listen to this book in one sitting, but it was impossible due to the length and available time. I could barely wait for commute time to listen. I was both sad and satisfied when it ended.
