Historia
Travelling at almost 18,000 miles per hour - 10 times faster than a rifle bullet - Yuri Gagarin circles the globe in just 106 minutes. From his windows, he sees the Earth as nobody has before, crossing a sunset and a sunrise, crossing oceans and continents, witnessing its beauty and its fragility. While his launch begins in total secrecy, within hours of his landing, he has become a world celebrity - the first human to leave the planet. Beyond tells the thrilling story behind that epic flight on its 60th anniversary.

Great Parallels and Contrasts with Mercury
Revisado: 08-08-22
Having read and watched much about Mercury through Apollo, I was eager to learn about our competition. This book is a wonderful story of the Soviet space program in its first half-decade in the context of the Soviet world and of the Cold War. The stories of Gagarin, Korolev, and the other cosmonauts is nicely done, with differences being reflected in their personalities and experiences. I highly recommend this to someone who loves anything about the Space Race.

Historia
In January 1973, Richard Nixon had just been inaugurated after winning re-election in a historic landslide. He enjoyed an almost 70 percent approval rating. But by April 1973, his presidency had fallen apart as the Watergate scandal metastasized into what White House counsel John Dean called “a full-blown cancer.” King Richard is the intimate, utterly absorbing narrative of the tension-packed hundred days when the Watergate conspiracy unraveled as the burglars and their handlers turned on one another, exposing the crimes of a vengeful president.

Ended sooner than I thought, but great detail leve
Revisado: 06-22-22
The book is well-researched, and I enjoy the Nixon tapes snippets after each chapter. The narrator's voice is perfect for this material: vaguely sinister with a good amount of gravitas, yet surprisingly decent at doing other people's voices for clarity.
I wish it went all the way to his resignation in detail, but it covers a narrower time period. This is my second book by this author and my second by this narrator. Both are excellent.

After eight years on the air, Desi Arnaz did not love Lucy any more. On screen, they were dynamite, a comedy pairing more successful than any Hollywood had ever produced. But when the cameras stopped rolling, they fought, screamed and threatened each other more each season. Finally, an argument in Desi's production office turned violent. Lucy hurled a cocktail glass past his head, and Desi demanded a divorce. He moved out that night. After nearly 20 years, America's favorite couple was finished.

Informative, well-paced, and touching
Revisado: 06-12-22
The narrator was easy to understand and read at a good pace. The story itself is also well-paced, and does a good job covering the couple individually before their meeting and after their divorce. It's a sweet story, showing how even after great pain, a couple can find the ability to remain caring and affectionate as divorced superstars. I have a lot of respect for both Lucille and Desi after this book, despite each's flaws (which are not ignored).

In October 1962, at the height of the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union appeared to be sliding inexorably toward a nuclear conflict over the placement of missiles in Cuba. Veteran Washington Post reporter Michael Dobbs has pored over previously untapped American, Soviet, and Cuban sources to produce the most authoritative book yet on the Cuban missile crisis.

meaty and detailed
Revisado: 06-02-22
This book is well-paced, with a good balance of detail, context, and parallel storylines. It's nicely researched with information that hadnt been uncovered in previous tellings, and the narrator has the right tone for the material. i highly recommend to someone who is interested in the Crisis, and maybe is familiar with older tellings and interested in additional angles and updated facts.

Frampton's reading of his story is wonderful
Revisado: 05-23-21
What a cool life Peter has had. From getting introduced and absorbed into the Rolling Stones' circle at 15 to his lifelong friendship with David Bowie and his endless string of collaborations with all generations of musicians, this man's career is exciting and wonderful. He does a great job of conveying where his head is at through all of this. The sense of wonder, amazement, and gratitude for all the opportunities he kept being given (which he mostly earned through his skill and reputation) really makes this feel like a humble and grounded star story. I highly recommend this.

Historia
In this groundbreaking look at the Cuban Missile Crisis, Martin Sherwin not only gives us a riveting sometimes hour-by-hour explanation of the crisis itself, but also explores the origins, scope, and consequences of the evolving place of nuclear weapons in the post-World War II world. Mining new sources and materials, and going far beyond the scope of earlier works on this critical face-off between the United States and the Soviet Union — triggered when Khrushchev began installing missiles in Cuba at Castro's behest....

A thorough telling
Revisado: 01-10-21
I found this to be a thorough telling of the Cubam Missile Crisis, told in the context of the first 17 years of nuclear decisions and the consequences of them. The Kruschev side, the close calls at sea, and seeing the mercurial nature of everyone's viewpoints throughout the Crisis are all fantastic.

Historia
Space is a world devoid of the things we need to live and thrive: air, gravity, hot showers, fresh produce, privacy, beer. Space exploration is in some ways an exploration of what it means to be human. How much can a person give up? How much weirdness can they take? What happens to you when you can’t walk for a year? Have sex? Smell flowers? What happens if you vomit in your helmet during a space walk? Is it possible for the human body to survive a bailout at 17,000 miles per hour?

Revisado: 05-31-20
Having absorbed space stuff since I was a kid, a book has to give new info, a new perspective, or just otherwise feel original for me to really love it. This book is chock full of research AND firsthand experience with regard to everything that has led up to the "dealing with the human" aspects of a long-duration mission.
The author has q great sense of humor, too

Frank W. Abagnale was one of the most daring con men, forgers, imposters, and escape artists in history. In his brief but notorious criminal career, Abagnale donned a pilot's uniform and copiloted a Pan Am jet, masqueraded as the supervising resident of a hospital, practiced law without a license, passed himself off as a college sociology professor, and cashed over $2.5 million in forged checks, all before he was 21. His story is now a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks.

Historia
When Roosevelt, Stalin, and Churchill met in Yalta in February 1945, Hitler's armies were on the run and victory was imminent. The Big Three wanted to draft a blueprint for a lasting peace - but instead set the stage for a 44-year division of Europe into Soviet and western spheres of influence. After fighting side by side for nearly four years, their political alliance was rapidly fracturing. By the time the leaders met again in Potsdam in July 1945, Russians and Americans were squabbling over the future of Germany and Churchill was warning about an "iron curtain" being drawn down over the Continent.

Historia
This essential biography, by the author most deeply familiar with the vast archives of the Soviet era, offers an unprecedented, fine-grained portrait of Stalin, the man and dictator. Without mythologizing Stalin as either benevolent or an evil genius, Khlevniuk resolves numerous controversies about specific events in the dictator's life while assembling many hundreds of previously unknown letters, memos, reports, and diaries into a comprehensive, compelling narrative of a life that altered the course of world history.

Great view into the Dictator
Revisado: 06-28-19
My first real intro to Stalin the man was in a book about Truman and the Potsdam Conference. This book did a great job of showing the horrors of Stalin and his systems. I found it informative and think it did a good job of keeping the foreign words from getting overwhelming.
The book is a good length, long enough be detailed but not so long as to be a slog.
I recommend it.
