Boring but good
Revisado: 05-16-23
The constant repetition works for me but I took French in college. Not sure how it would work as a first introduction

Historia
Jenny Offill’s heroine, referred to in these pages as simply “the wife”, once exchanged love letters with her husband postmarked Dept. of Speculation, their code name for all the uncertainty that inheres in life and in the strangely fluid confines of a long relationship. As they confront an array of common catastrophes - a colicky baby, a faltering marriage, stalled ambitions - the wife analyzes her predicament, invoking everything from Keats and Kafka to the thought experiments of the Stoics to the lessons of doomed Russian cosmonauts.

Not really a story
Revisado: 03-14-22
This reminds me of Virginia Woolf in a way. The stream of thoughts of the nameless narrator, the switching of tones by the reader. I would recommend it to those who are willing to listen to almost pure thought.

Historia
When someone makes a present of a fer-de-lance - the dreaded snake - to Nero Wolfe, Archie Goodwin knows he's close to solving two apparently unrelated murders. As for Wolfe, he's playing snake charmer in a case more deadly than a cobra and whistling a seductive tune he hopes will catch a killer with poison in his heart.

Fun mystery but why the cassette directions?
Revisado: 01-29-22
I like the book and I thought the narrator was excellent at conveying Archie Goodwin's view of the story which is how everything is presented.
What was weird is that is the digitized version of an old book on tape and they DIDN'T REMOVE THE TAPE CHANGING CUES!
So there you are in the middle of the story and suddenly the narrator tells me to turn the cassette over or change the cassette.
Really, it would take less than an hour to edit the cues out...

A dream of a book

The combination of the writer and the narrator blends into a poetry of a story.

Historia
Miss Pettigrew is a down-on-her-luck, middle-aged governess sent by her employment agency to work for a nightclub singer rather than a household of unruly children. Over a period of 24 hours, as she becomes caught up in the life of Delysia LaFloss, her own life is changed - forever. This charming, funny, light-hearted 1938 novel was a bestseller on its first appearance. Read by Academy Award winning actress Frances McDormand, who stars in the 2008 film as Miss Pettigrew.

Only slight issue
Revisado: 04-05-16
This is a wonderful story, better than the movie which I also loved. The only issue I had was a slight problem with the narrator's voice going a little too soft very occasionally
