I don’t really like it.
Revisado: 04-16-25
Too long for the amount of information given. I don’t like page-filler information. Just don’t have time for it. Stories are too long although I like the Stories he tells…but only when I have time for them.
I really hate big long books if the information isn’t necessary.
Also the narrator is great (5 stars) at what he does. But in general I prefer books are in American accent. Just easier for me to understand. I don’t know the purpose of using other accent, especially for a how-to book like this ….written by an American author.

I think it’s a bit on superficial side. I do highly recommend it for teenagers or people who don’t know immigrant families. For me there isn’t a lot to learn. It’s more like watch an episode of sitcoms.

Historia
In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian-American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food.

I think Korean foods are smelly as a vegetarian
Revisado: 04-22-24
I bought a physical book from Amazon plus this audiobook for studying English.
Con: I almost threw up listening to the food descriptions. I could recall the dead flesh smells covered by even smelly scallions and onions in Korean food.
Too much food scenes. I don’t really care about Korean foods. It’s all about scallion and red pepper. They remove the authentic taste from each food.
Racism: how author thought white people can’t tell Asian faces apart. This is doubly racism. In reality, according to psychologists, adults cannot recognize faces of different races they aren’t familiar with in their childhood.
Pro: author wrote well. She describes scene well. Took a while to get into the character. But once I did, it was good.
3 generations: grandma’s husband cheated and left the wife. Mom’s husband paid for women chronically. What do you think the trajectory going forward? It’s fact of life for men.

Revisado: 06-03-21
a good book for teenagers, college grads or people who don't know anything about investment. But in any case, there is too many fillers. The 10-hour book can be condensed to 1 and a half hours. She talks a lot of her personal life that has not much to do with investment.
I think most people don't care about the author's law degree or her feelings in the phone conversations with her Dad. Readers want to know the content and application of the knowledge... we don't need editorial comments about her internal emotions since their importance is negligible.
I guess I am not interested in this book as a memoir of her discovery in investment.
The author had fun writing it but it was difficult to me.
She is a great reader, dramatic and theatrical, but ...also with too much of teenage exaggeration for every ounce of thought and feeling. It was hard to stay focused. I didn't know when to pay close attention to the important things. I was listening for cues but her vocal cues were misleading.
Anyway I only listened to the second chapter. I skipped 90% of the first chapter. I will try to finish the book. SO far, this book sounds very childish.

Sex and the City-ish
Revisado: 07-19-20
The author narrates well. But too much of a drama queen for me. Reads like a novel but it is a memoir. Pretty scary, right? Her command of English is fantastic. She is a professional writer. I probably learn more about that than anything else. I think she exaggerates her stories, so I don't appreciate that. It's psychotic....oh, that is why it was made into a movie. I give a 5 star for narration and 1 star for story..

fear 101: if you are new to this realm, get it.
Revisado: 07-13-20
But if you are a senior tackling this on a different level, don't get it. I only listened to the first hour and the first interview, it is a bit juvenile to me. I am not sure what makes Mel the expert on this topic. Very strange. But at least she is trying to help, so maybe it helps the world in some ways.

Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Historia
As Rwanda was thrown into chaos during the 1994 genocide, Rusesabagina, a hotel manager, turned the luxurious Hotel Milles Collines into a refuge for more than 1,200 Tutsi and moderate Hutu refugees, while fending off their would-be killers with a combination of diplomacy and deception. In An Ordinary Man, he tells the story of his childhood, retraces his accidental path to heroism, revisits the 100 days in which he was the only thing standing between his “guests” and a hideous death, and recounts his subsequent life as a refugee and activist.
