This book surprised me. It definitely went down paths I did not anticipate. Yes, this is a story about an Indian woman (Sarita) trying to find her husband (Karun) in a pre apocalyptic world. But more than that this is a love story between Sarita and Karun, and Jazz (a man) and Karun. We learn in great detail how both these relationships develop. So this may not be a book for everyone. But for me, I became invested in all the characters right away and had to find out how it ended. I thought the author did a great job at writing the emotion, the passion, and turmoil for both these relationships. The book also explores Indian culture, traditions and the conflict between Hindu and Muslim. We are also introduced to a colorful cast of characters. The narrators did an excellent job as well, and the editing was flawless, no loud breaths to distract the listener.

This was such a wonderful story. The author and narrator did such a great job at bringing Ruthie to life. I felt for her and rooted for her as she progressed from lowly writer to showrunner for a network TV show. I enjoyed learning the ins and outs of what it was like to run a show, the joys, the disappointments, the many compromises. And the romance was poignant. Ruthie and Dave were injured, scarred souls, afraid to reach out for what they wanted. They made a great couple. But be aware they aren't the usual couple you will read about in romance novels. Ruthie isn't the beautiful heroine and Dave isn't an alpha male or dashing rogue. But even so, I really enjoyed their romance. The ending was satisfying, though, it may have been a tad unrealistic. But this is fiction, so anything goes. This is a wonderful summer read for those who enjoy women's fiction.

Won't Be Reading Sequel

Total
2 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 07-09-10

I can't believe this is book 1 of a proposed trilogy. Book 1 is so long winded and spans so many years, I felt like I was reading 3 books in 1.

The beginning starts okay. But I never really felt a connection with any of the characters. If you are looking for a good vampire tale, you won't find it here. The vampires or virals really seemed more like zombies to me. Then, it skips hundreds of years, right past all the stuff that would have made this story interesting to me. We don't get to see the virals taking over the country and the attempts by others to protect themselves. This I would have found interesting and really wish the author had expanded on this more. But instead, we get all this summed up in a few pages.

Then, we move hundreds of years into the future to learn about a new cast of characters. I couldn't help wondering why I had been told, in great detail, about the first cast of characters. Just to waste my time? Except for Amy, my suspicion was correct. The new cast of characters aren't much more interesting than the first for me. There's a real soap opera feel to it with everyone wanting someone they could not have. And the new society Mr. Cronin created wasn't that much different than our current society. I would have liked a bit more imagination. After all, we are hundreds of years into the future.

I agree with others that think this book is over hyped. I also felt like the book's voice changed at various times throughout the book, becoming poetic and too mystical/religious for me. I skimmed through parts of this audiobook to get 3/4 of the way through. I'm taking a break, which is not a good sign! I definitely won't be reading any sequels.

Well Written And Passionate

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 01-13-10

A very well written and passionate historical romance. Garreth is a proud, lonely marquis who only believes in science and numbers, and sets out to prove his cousin's psychic is a fraud. Madame Esmeralda, a.k.a. Jenny, makes her living as a fortune teller. She has learned some hard lessons because of the circumstances of her birth. But she is still hopeful and resilient. She's also very perceptive and kind of heart. When Garreth and Jenny meet, they start a teasing, cat and mouse game that eventually leads them to a passionate romance. These two made a great pair, the subtle wit and humor, and their fiery arguments definitely made this story interesting. By the end, both characters have grown. Even the secondary storylines of Garreth's sister, Laura, and Garreth's cousin, Ned, are very well done. I highly recommend this book and will definitely read more by this author.

More Than a Simple Teenage Romance

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 01-01-10

The thing I liked most about this book, is that it was much more than a simple teenage vampire romance. At first, the story runs a predictable course, the tone is lighthearted with a sprinkling of humor. Jessica is at first very skeptical about Lucius' story that they are betrothed vampires who need to wed to ensure peace for their warring clans. She wants to date another boy and tries to resist her attraction to Lucius. I enjoyed the interaction between Jessica and Lucius. Jessica was a down to earth farm girl, who in the end becomes the self confident and beautiful vampire princess she was destined to become. And Lucius, who at first seemed a bit arrogant, proved he could also be noble. This story definitely takes some twists and turns that I did not see coming. I won't ruin the surprise, but there were times when I wanted to shake both Lucius and Jessica. Their inability to tell each other the truth both frustrated me and also kept me from putting this book down. The second half of this book takes a darker turn, and then it gets even darker still. This is a romantic story about honor and duty. But it is also a story about what lengths people will go to in order to prove their love, and to protect the ones they love. A really good read that is hard to put down!

Very Romantic

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 12-21-09

Wow! This was one of the best romances I have read this year. The mystery of what was really happening to Luce and Daniel made this book so, so difficult to put down. The author's writing style and the narrator's reading of this audiobook, almost lyrical at times, kept me so engrossed. Luce, clueless at times, did make me want to shake her. But that is only because I became so invested in her story. And Daniel, hot and cold by turns, at first baffled me. But by the end of the book, I definitely understood why he behaved this way. This is a very romantic story about star crossed lovers and the battle between good and evil. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Really Enjoyed it

After reading and loving "Oryx And Crake", I was eagerly anticipating the release of "The Year Of The Flood". And happily, I was not disappointed. "The Year Of The Flood" is a companion book to "Oryx And Crake", meaning this story takes place during the same time as "Oryx And Crake". It's not a sequel. Through the stories of Ren and Toby, we learn more about what it was like to live in the pleeblands, outside of the Helthwyzer complex. We also learn about the Gardeners, a cult-like group that has unforeseen influence on the men instrumental to the catastrophe to come (Snowman and Crake).

Why did I rate this only four stars? Because I found the first few chapters very confusing. It took a while for me to figure out what was going on. If this happens to you, don't give up. The payoff is well worth the time and effort. I also found the first half of the book a bit slow. The characters were very interesting, though, and by the time I reached the halfway point, I could not put this audiobook down. I am not sure if Ms. Atwood is planning to write a sequel, but I would love to read it. I'd especially love to read more about Zeb and Adam One and their time at the Helthwyzer complex. Really enjoyed this one!

Very Good Contemporary Romance

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 09-23-09

Not Another Bad Date was a very good contemporary romance. Adele hasn't had much luck in the dating department for years, until she sees her ex-boyfriend Zack. But he hurt her in the past, so she is reluctant to fall in love with him again. However, the attraction is still there, so when these two get together, the sparks do fly. I liked the way their relationship develops slowly, and we really do get to know the characters. My one complaint is that the narrator's breath should have been edited out. After a while I did get used to it, but I would have enjoyed it more if it hadn't been there. Otherwise, this was a very good, very easy going romance.

Really Enjoyed It

The Wedding Trap was an endearing and sensual historical romance, with a very likeable hero and heroine. The author did a great job at giving both her characters depth. I felt Eliza's pain when she thought her love for Kit was unrequited, and I kept hoping Kit would finally realize his feelings for Eliza before it was too late. Kit and Eliza's relationship does develop slowly and very naturally. But once Kit decides to seduce Eliza, the sparks do fly! The thing I liked the most about this romance is that there weren't any extraneous or over-the-top conflicts added to this story. The narrator did a good job as well. Give this one a try, if you like sweet, emotion filled and sensual romances.

Love This Series!

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 09-14-09

I love this series! These historical/romantic suspense novels are so well written, with complex characters, that I hate when the story ends. For me the romance between Brisbon and Lady Julia is hotter than some of the more explicitly sexual romances I have read. It took a while for them to decide, one way or the other, to be together. But the wait was worth it. The mystery of what was really going on in Grimsgrave Hall was also executed well and kept me guessing. If you haven't read the first two books in this series, "Silent In The Grave" and "Silent In The Sanctuary", I recommend reading these books first to truly appreciate this series.
