The best kind of anti-hero
Revisado: 02-13-25
This is a review for the entire series. At first it’s a bit much with the detailed sex but the series grows on you. After book one you’re not sure you should want to continue but then you start the second and Sweet pea draws you in even further. By the 5th book, you know it needs to end but you’ve become so attached to her that you can’t help but hope there will be a 5-10-15 years later book with an ending that blows you away. I’m not sure serial killers brains work quite like this but I hope that if there is someone(s) out there that is or becomes a real sweet pea, that there will also be some bad seeds to take care of her.

What a waste of time!
Revisado: 09-19-23
#1 the narrator should not be allowed to be a narrator!
#2 the author just took everything from her bestselling series and made a mockery of it. The characters are shallow and unimaginative, the story is a hodgepodge of the other three mixed with filler to create a worthless story.
I was so hoping this would be a better account of how it all began but whether it was he telling or just the shallow plot it ruined any hopes of this series going forward.

William de Worde is the accidental editor of the Discworld's first newspaper. Now he must cope with the traditional perils of a journalist's life - people who want him dead, a recovering vampire with a suicidal fascination for flash photography, some more people who want him dead in a different way and, worst of all, the man who keeps begging him to publish pictures of his humorously shaped potatoes.

Not my Vetenari
Revisado: 05-18-23
You know how when you read a book - a physical book- you have your own voices in your head narrating the different characters? The way Vetenari, Vimes and Carrot were not how I heard them at all! But it was spot on for Nobby, Auto and everyone else.

Historia
In 1780s London, a prosperous merchant finds his quiet life upended when he unexpectedly receives an unusual creature - and meets a most extraordinary woman - in this much-lauded, atmospheric debut that examines our capacity for wonder, obsession, and desire. One September evening in 1785, Jonah Hancock hears an urgent knocking on his front door near the docks of London. The captain of one of Jonah’s trading vessels is waiting eagerly on the front step, bearing shocking news. On a voyage to the Far East, he sold the Jonah’s ship for something rare and far more precious: a mermaid.

Easily two separate stories
Revisado: 03-24-23
This could easily have been two separate books, a Cinderella story of a courtesan and a story about a mermaid. I found it odd that the narrator barely changed her voice for men but took on a horrible falsetto for the female characters. Overall it was a decent read that while it took a moment to invest my time in, was worth the effort and may have found its way on to my reread pile.

When Dorothea's charitable work brings her to Oakgate Prison, she is delighted by the chance to explore her fascination with phrenology and test her hypothesis that the shape of a person's skull can cast a light on their darkest crimes. But when she meets one of the prisoners, the teenaged seamstress Ruth, she is faced with another strange idea.

A must read - for a second time!
Revisado: 01-17-23
I just finished this book for my second time and its amazing what you pick up on the second time around when you know the final outcome! So not only do I recommend it as a great read but also as one to put in your "re-read" pile!!
***7/1/24 - I'm just finishing this book AGAIN, I've lost track of how many times I've read it. Each time I reread it, I'm catching more and more detail. For those that struggle with the end, when you reread it, it will make more and more sense. This author KNEW how this book would end when she wrote the first page! I'm still wowed each time it ends!
Jayne Entwistle has become one of my favorite narrators, I find myself LOOKING for her now when I'm in search of my next title. She really gives her characters texture and expresses what the author is trying to get across to you.
I agree with one of the other reviewers that said they cried copiously throughout the book. It's graphically heart wrenching, you can't help but feel horrible for Ruth and the life she was forced to endure.
I anxiously await the next book that grabs my emotions as well as this one has!

Revisado: 03-12-20
While this does not live up to the greatness of the first book it was a decent sequel. I would’ve liked more about Katsu (clockwork octopus) and more of Thaniel and Mori together. I hope there will be more to come!

The game's afoot once more as the long-suffering Dr. John Watson and a partially decomposed Warlock Holmes (though he's getting better) face off against Moriarty's gang, the Pinkertons, flesh-eating horses, a parliament of imps, boredom, Surrey, a succubus, an overly Canadian aristocrat, a tricycle fight to the death, and the dreaded Pumpcrow. Oh, and a hellhound, one assumes.

Gut buster!
Revisado: 03-08-18
Would you listen to Warlock Holmes: The Hell-Hound of the Baskervilles again? Why?
Oh yes!! I see Warlock Holmes as my new "go to" if I just need a good giggle!
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
I don't know if reading this as a physical book would have the same effect. Its a GREAT story line but the narrator steals the day and really makes the story shine!
What does Robert Garson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
When I die, I want this man to narrate my autobiography! His dry sarcastic British accent brings this book to life! Watson has always been described as a put out genius having to deal with the simpleton Holmes. Garson embodies Watson and drives home idiocy of Holmes and the cracked patience of Watson!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I laughed til I cried over the horses! I even replayed the part about the murder weapon appearing point first in Warlocks hand for my husband after he came in to find out why I was "snorfuling" (laughing/snorting/chortling whole heartedly) in bed.
Any additional comments?
I NEED MORE!!! Of BOTH of these men! I want to find them, kidnap them and make them tell me stories all day long! I want to live with Holmes and Watson and bask in their adventures!

Historia
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

A little slow and a bit predictable but was well worth the read! The characters are likable and you can’t help but wonder what the future holds for them. Not sure it’s sequel worthy but I hope the characters live happily ever after!
