Sci-Fi Noir at its Best
Revisado: 01-31-25
Total Eclipse is a thrilling sci-fi noir that fuses crime, conspiracy, and dark humor into an electrifying narrative.
The story plunges readers into a lunar colony turned dystopian playground, where billionaires and sex robots with murderous habits wreak havoc. Kate Devana, a retired Marine and Space Force Guardian, has a sharp wit and hardened resolve that make her a captivating protagonist. Faced with a rogue AI and a tangled web of corruption, Kate navigates a treacherous world where justice is murky and survival is uncertain. Werne’s twists are well crafted, the dialogue sharp, and the action sequences cinematic.
Lauren Garvin’s narration elevates the experience, capturing Kate’s grit and sarcasm. This audiobook is an absolute must-listen. Five stars, without hesitation!

I loved this book. Great characters. Wonderful motivations. Just enough nerdiness to make it seem real without getting bogged down in details.

Historia
An overconfident pilot with a stolen spaceship must fix an alien device before time runs out. The Newtonians came to Earth 2000 years ago looking for a place to call home. Earth was perfect, except its sun had a fatal flaw that needed to be corrected. Once it was fixed, they were free to abandon their ship and leave it to orbit the planet below. Earthlings commonly refer to it as the moon.

A Fun Read
Revisado: 12-23-23
I took a listen to C. J. Boyle's sci-fi book, The Adventures of Kirk Rogers Inside the Moon the first installment of The Kirk Rogers Series. It was a fun story that had me grinning and thinking for at least a week after I listened to it.
The unique world-building stood out as the key factor of this book, an aspect that I always appreciate.
Kirk Rogers, a devoted older brother who's willing to go to any length, like stealing a spaceship, to rescue his younger sister, Laura. What unfolds is a series of unexpected events that lead the two of them into an entirely different realm—inside the moon itself!
Once there, they form some unusual and endearing friendships, [spoiler alert] one of which is a giant spider, someone known as The Dangerous One, and more. The story arc is top-notch, and the characters are relatable and charming despite familiar tropes. Again, her world-building is what I keep coming back to, almost as if the environment was a kind of character of its own.
The story pays homage to all things sci-fi, sprinkling in subtle nods to beloved classics like Star Trek and Buck Rogers. While the story carries some familiar themes, it does so with a fresh and imaginative take on the concept of the moon.
For me, no audiobook is complete without a good narrator, and in this case, Jared Kedzia didn't disappoint. He pulled off both male and female voices as well as distinct characters.
LINE EDITING
While some minor line editing issues occasionally pulled me out of the story, they were outweighed by the sheer fun and creativity of the narrative. This point is a common criticism of mine, even for traditionally published novels, so probably won't impact others.
VERDICT
Now, let's talk ratings. If you're a fan of fun and quirky tales, this audiobook deserves a spot on your to-be-read list.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Story
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Narration
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Overall
At first, because of my pickiness, the "Overall" rating would have landed somewhere between four and five stars. Because this book stuck with me for over a week, while I listened to another novel, I boosted it to a five-star rating.

Historia
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Love this book
Revisado: 12-07-23
Steel World has an amazing premise and a main character that is fun to listen to. I'm a huge fan of the author-narrator team. I won't give away any details, but suffice it to say, it's an intense ride and lots of fun at the same time. My favorite kind of Sci-Fi. If you like Expeditionary Force, you'll probably like this series.

Historia
Thousands of crew are reported dead, including the ship’s captain. Reluctantly, the young XO, Galvin Quintos, will be taking command of the fleet's crippled dreadnaught, the USS Hamilton, while doing his best to bring fleet survivors back to Earth. To make matters worse, there’s a murderer running loose on board the ship, critically low fuel levels, and the Grish are back, in fast pursuit and ready to finish what they’d started. Only by sheer luck - and a good measure of cagey smarts - will Quintos be able to rise to the challenge.

Fun listen. Solid military sci-fi. Recommend
Revisado: 11-24-23
If you enjoy military sci-fi that is character driven, I recommend this one. It is less about strategy than some, but has plenty of battle and they run into some unexpected challenges.

A Great Debut SciFi Novel
Revisado: 11-18-23
The story arc of this novel was great, and had a flair of Firefly, one of my favorite TV shows (RIP). The performance was really good and I think the narrator will be one to keep track of.
As an author, I have particular hangups about the writing style. I won’t mention them here in case my writing biases influence your reading pleasure. If you listen to the five minute sample, you’ll know if you like the style.
It’s well worth a listen.

I enjoyed finally getting to meet a real nemesis, but this set drew out longer than it needed to. The narrator is a little whiny.
