Historia
Born and raised in Mississippi, Peter K. Lutken, Jr. (1920–2014) joined the army in 1941 and was assigned to the Coast Artillery. Originally sent to India to guard airfields, he was reassigned to the British V Force, then the American OSS (Office of Strategic Services and precursor to the CIA) after he volunteered for reconnaissance missions behind Japanese lines. Skills he had learned as a boy in the backwoods and swamps around the Pearl River stood him in good stead, and by the end of the war, he attained the rank of major, commanding an entire battalion of ethnic Kachins and other local people of northern Burma (now called Myanmar).

Interesting Memoir; great narration
Revisado: 04-23-25
This is a memoir by Peter Lutken, Jr. and narrated by his son. Lutken took an unusual path in WWII. He graduated from College in the ROTC and was sent to India and then Burma to help the Chinese and British armies fighting the Japanese. He was wounded in combat and served with great distinction. He also raised a regiment of Kachin soldiers who fought for the Allies. He had a lifetime worth of experiences and stories during his service in WWII. He was an American hero of the greatest generation, someone who took initiative and solved problems on the spot. Lutken retired from the Army as a Major. He was present for the defeat of the Japanese army that invaded Burma in 1941 after capturing Singapore. This is a window to a time gone by to an America that is very different from the one we live in. No grievances, no whining, no blaming other people, These were Americans who took challenges seriously and tried to solve problems. I miss those Americans.

Historia
It was a time of revolution. The Roman Revolution describes the little known "crisis of the third century", and how it led to a revolutionary new Roman Empire. Long before the more famous collapse of the Western Roman Empire in the fifth century, in the years between AD 235-275, barbarian invasions, civil war, and plague devastated ancient Rome.

Popular history of Diocletian and Constantine
Revisado: 12-24-24
This is a popular history of the transformation of the Roman state by Diocletian and Constantine. They put an end to instability and serial murder of emperors by troops. Diocletian believed the empire was too big to manage, and, as events would show, he was right. Constantine used Christianity to attempt to bring cultural unity to an unwieldy empire. The book is well researched, but does not overdo the details. The performance is an A plus.

Historia
In The Grand Strategy of the Roman Empire, seasoned defense analyst Edward N. Luttwak reveals how the Romans were able to combine military strength, diplomacy, and fortifications to effectively respond to changing threats. Rome's secret was not ceaseless fighting, but comprehensive strategies that unified force, diplomacy, and an immense infrastructure of roads, forts, walls, and barriers. Finally, as barbarians began to penetrate the empire, Rome filed large armies in a strategy of "defense-in-depth," allowing invaders to pierce Rome's borders.

Academic Work But Worthwhile
Revisado: 12-13-24
This is a dissertation on the strategy of the Roman Empire. It is thoughtful and thorough. The command of detail is impressive. This is not a popular history or an easy read but it proves its thesis that the Romans had a grand strategy for preserving their empire. The strategy worked quite well for hundreds of years and emperors of all stripes followed the plan pretty well. The author has great command of detail and marshalls the facts in support of his thesis.

Francis Drake Led A Life Full of Adventure
Revisado: 12-05-24
This is a biography of Francis Drake, the great English sailor. It recounts his voyage around the world and his participation in the war against Spain. Unlike Magellan or Cook, Drake survived his round-the-world trip because (the author argues) he was willing to work with local people. Drake was willing to compromise with them. He communicated with them, and he tried to understand their needs and concerns. He was one of those people who pushed forward toward danger rather than away from it. Guys like Drake shared all the risks that they asked their men to accept. The author also recounts his meetings with Queen Elizabeth I who would stay up late at night listening to Drake tell tall tales of his adventures. We could use a few more people like Francis Drake in our world today. In sum, a book that gave me a sense of who Drake was and why he accomplished so much. The performance is quite good as well.

In Maritime Power and the Struggle for Freedom, Peter Padfield presents a superb description and analysis of naval campaigns conducted between 1788 and 1851 that shaped the modern world. Winner of the Mountbatten Maritime Prize, this is the second of Padfield's masterful trilogy that traces the impact of naval power on modern history, and the means by which it has been enacted.

The book is outstanding as it provides a sustained argument that sea power is the source of the political freedoms we all enjoy. The battle descriptions and the character of the officers of the Royal Navy are skillful and informative. The narrator is always very good.

Historia
He is one of the most reviled English kings in history. He drove his kingdom to the brink of civil war a dozen times in less than twenty years. He allowed his male lovers to rule the kingdom. He led a great army to the most ignominious military defeat in English history. He was Edward II, and this book tells his story. Kathryn Warner strips away the myths which have been created about him over the centuries, and provides a far more accurate and vivid picture of him than has previously been seen.

Good description of a flawed King
Revisado: 02-28-24
The book is scholarly and well researched. My only disagreement is the account of Edward’s murder and death. The author speculates that Edward lived on in a monastery after he was deposed. I think it is clear he was murdered by Roger Mortimer.

Historia
In his first book of history, Away Off Shore, New York Times best-selling author Nathaniel Philbrick reveals the people and the stories behind what was once the whaling capital of the world. Beyond its charm, quaint local traditions, and whaling yarns, Philbrick explores the origins of Nantucket in this comprehensive history. From the English settlers who thought they were purchasing a "Native American ghost town" but actually found a fully realized society, the story of Nantucket is a truly unique chapter of American history.

Historia
John Gaunt was the son of Edward III, brother to the Black Prince, father to Henry IV, and the sire of all those Tudors. He has had pretty bad press: supposed usurper of Richard II’s crown and the focus of hatred in the Peasants’ Revolt, as they torched his home, the Savoy Palace. Helen Carr paints a complex portrait of a man who held the levers of power on the English and European stage, passionately upheld chivalric values, pressed for the Bible to be translated into English, and patronized the arts.

Great biography of an important Lancastrian
Revisado: 11-10-23
This book is excellent in every way in its discussion of the complexity of the political situation leading up to the War of the Roses. The performance is first rate. If you want to understand how the schism in the family occurred, this book answers those questions. Gaunt was the younger brother of the Black Prince, oldest son of Edward III. He was a faithful servant of the crown despite numerous attempts on his life by Richard II.

Historia
Brunelleschi's Dome is the story of how a Renaissance genius bent men, materials, and the very forces of nature to build an architectural wonder we continue to marvel at today. Denounced at first as a madman, Brunelleschi was celebrated at the end as a genius. He engineered the perfect placement of brick and stone, built ingenious hoists and cranes to carry an estimated 70 million pounds hundreds of feet into the air, and designed the workers' platforms and routines so carefully that only one man died during the decades of construction.

Excellent Biography of Renaissance Architect
Revisado: 04-08-23
The book is outstanding in every way. Brunelleschi deserves a biography because he was an important figure in the architecture of his time. The book is only six hours long and it describes the many battles that Brunelleschi had to get the dome built. He was able to persuade other people and government officials to see things his way and his achievement is worth remembering. The narrator does a great job bringing the story to life. The narrator is quite skillful.
