Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Historia
Minor Detail begins during the summer of 1949, one year after the war that the Palestinians mourn as the Nakba - the catastrophe that led to the displacement and exile of some 700,000 people - and the Israelis celebrate as the War of Independence. Israeli soldiers murder an encampment of Bedouin in the Negev desert, and among their victims, they capture a Palestinian teenager, and they rape her, kill her, and bury her in the sand. Many years later, in the near-present day, a young woman in Ramallah tries to uncover some of the details surrounding this particular rape and murder.

Not a relaxing, feel-good read, but I didn't expect it to be. Sometimes you will wonder where this is all going and then suddenly, it all comes together. I recommend!

Historia
It was easy for Elizabeth. She married the man she loved, bore him two children and made a home for him which was the envy of their friends. It was harder for Ruth. She married Elizabeth’s son and then found that, somehow, she could never quite measure up. Isolation, deceit and betrayal fill the gaps between the two individual women and between their different worlds. In this complex thriller, Philippa Gregory deploys all her insight into what women want and what women fear, as Ruth confronts the shifting borders of her own sanity.

Revisado: 05-23-24
If you love Lifetime movies done with UK accents and listening to stories about a woman being portrayed as an unfit mother, this is the story for you! Comes complete with a horrible husband and in-laws. The shocking ending was not worth the nearly 10 hours of awful story.

If you love listening to "But I love you" and "Nooo, I have to go home to my husband" repeated for hours, this is the book for you! It started great but then was disrupted by Charles' irrational pursuit of his first love. It did offer up a satisfying ending though.

Quite an intense account of what it must be like to go through a civil war and end up a refugee. I kept thinking about the poor people of Gaza and what they must be going through. I'm sure it's even worse than what is portrayed in this story.

Pretty good, but narration issues
Revisado: 03-23-24
Authors should stick to writing and let talented narrators tell the story. This would have been SO MUCH BETTER if the author had not narrated. Accents among Greeks, Germans, Hungarians, and more were random.
Narration aside, this is an important book and worth listening to...it's just an awful lot of effort to not be distracted by the accents. Maybe the author will consider a re-do with a professional narrator.

Phoebe is obsessed with the memory and death of her sister Faith, a beautiful idealistic hippie who died in Italy in 1970. Narration had some issues: Barry always sounds congested, and Phoebe’s voice is frequently too over the top. The story just wasn’t very compelling.
