Historia
After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss.

Decent Listen

Only issue is similar voices for many characters, but in all honesty, I shouldn’t complain. Great story, awesome if you can get on the cheap, and sweet to follow now that the TV series is around

Historia
In this vivid and compelling narrative, the Seven Years' War - long seen as a mere backdrop to the American Revolution - takes on a whole new significance. Relating the history of the war as it developed, Anderson shows how the complex array of forces brought into conflict helped both to create Britain's empire and to sow the seeds of its eventual dissolution. Beginning with a skirmish in the Pennsylvania backcountry involving an inexperienced George Washington, the Iroquois chief Tanaghrisson, and the ill-fated French emissary Jumonville, Anderson reveals a chain of events that would lead to world conflagration.

Historia
When we seek an example of great leaders with unalloyed courage, the person who comes to mind is Winston Churchill: the iconic, visionary war leader immune from the consensus of the day, who stood firmly for his beliefs when everyone doubted him. But how did young Winston become Churchill? What gave him the strength to take on the superior force of Nazi Germany when bombs rained on London and so many others had caved? In this landmark biography of Winston Churchill based on extensive new material, the true genius of the man, statesman, and leader can finally be fully understood.

Brilliant! Roberts Crushes Once Again
Revisado: 01-10-25
Andrew Roberts is a master biographer. He continues his awesomeness with "Churchill", an epic and well written book.
My ONLY criticism is that Roberts often excuses Churchill's flaws. Rather than just rolling with it, he needs to justify such that I think I only counted about 5-9 things Churchill ever did "wrong".
Here's a made up example. Churchill ate too much butter. Roberts: Everyone ate a lot of butter. My thinking is that Roberts should just roll with it.
Also, i think Roberts goes too easy on Churchill's ardent colonialism. I have no strong views, but think that would have been a subject matter that could have been more readily taken up simply than "He was born in the Victorian Age...."
Anyway, it's a brilliant book. You'll learn a lot and for 1 credit?! It's a steal

Historia
Hailed as the most compelling biography of the German dictator yet written, Ian Kershaw's Hitler brings us closer than ever before to the heart of its subject's immense darkness. From his illegitimate birth in a small Austrian village to his fiery death in a bunker under the Reich chancellery in Berlin, Adolf Hitler left a murky trail, strewn with contradictory tales and overgrown with self-created myths. One truth prevails: the sheer scale of the evils that he unleashed on the world has made him a demonic figure without equal in the 20th century.

Very comprehensive
Revisado: 04-11-24
This audiobook combines two of Kershaw’s other Hitler books “Hubris” and “Nemesis” into one.
The biography is comprehensive and well written.
The reader butchers German pronunciation a bit too frequently, but if you don’t speak German you likely won’t notice or care.
If you’re looking for a biography of a mad man, this fits the bill. Pairs very well with the book “Blitzed” too. That book provides the drug induced lunacy side that we miss in this tome.

Historia
When a pseudonymous programmer introduced “a new electronic cash system that’s fully peer-to-peer, with no trusted third party” to a small Online mailing list in 2008, very few paid attention. Ten years later, and against all odds, this upstart autonomous decentralized software offers an unstoppable and globally-accessible hard money alternative to modern central banks. The Bitcoin Standard analyzes the historical context to the rise of Bitcoin, the economic properties that have allowed it to grow quickly, and its likely economic, political, and social implications.

Gets Repetitive
Revisado: 10-11-23
Author starts strong and then just repeating over and over ad infinitum how terrible fiat is.
The irony is that I agree with everything Ammous said, but it just got so boring because the introduction of new themes and ideas was minimal vs the ongoing attack on fiat (which I agree, sucks).

Give it a few hours, and then you have excellence
Revisado: 10-06-23
It takes a bit to get used to the performance, but once the book gets going, the historical research is the best. Eric Foner, knows the ins and outs like the CFO of a company knowing the financials. The guy crushes it with respect to detail and historical insight.
This is not a book about the war per se, but very much a book revolving around Lincoln’s thoughts and blacks and slavery pre-1865.

Vividly written and exhaustively researched, Jonathan Eig’s King: A Life is the first major biography in decades of the civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.—and the first to include recently declassified FBI files. In this revelatory new portrait of the preacher and activist who shook the world, the bestselling biographer gives us an intimate view of the courageous and often emotionally troubled human being who demanded peaceful protest for his movement but was rarely at peace with himself.

The story is well written, but the narration brings everything to life. Brilliant job on each. Very highly recommend as the author does a wonderful job taking us from MLK’s grandparents to April 4, 1968 without skipping a beat.

Historia
Manias, Panics, and Crashes is a scholarly and entertaining account of the way that mismanagement of money and credit has led to financial explosions over the centuries. This seventh edition of an investment classic has been thoroughly revised and expanded following the latest crises to hit international markets. Renowned economist Robert Z. Aliber introduces the concept that global financial crises in recent years are not independent events, but symptomatic of an inherent instability in the international system.

Great Info, but Terribly Executed
Revisado: 09-05-23
I wanted to love this book, really, I did. Unfortunately the book skips around a lot, phrases are repeated on numerous occasions ("the bankers lost lots of their wealth and their reputations were destroyed"), and the coherency is just bad.
The narrator quotes passages but uses the same tone, making it hard to recognize a quote vs. the author's own words.
The book was likely an OG best seller because it was novel and addressed a topic others had not. However, there are now lots of books on manias and bubbles. This classic can now be retired.
For a similar theme check out " A History of Interest". Same themes, but significantly better written.
