Historia
Into the maelstrom of unprecedented contemporary debates about immigrants in the United States, this perfectly timed book gives us a portrait of what the new immigrant experience in America is really like. Written as a "guide" for the newly arrived, and providing "practical information and advice", Roya Hakakian, an immigrant herself, reveals what those who settle here love about the country, what they miss about their homes, the cruelty of some Americans, and the unceasing generosity of others.

An Instruction Book
Revisado: 04-14-25
If you are coming to America and speak English well enough to understand this book, it might be helpful. But it’s not a funny view of a newcomer’s experience nor does it give insight’s to help someone working with newcomers. I didn’t finish it.

Historia
It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs, once thought of almost as gods, were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

Maybe for Auditory learners
Revisado: 07-22-23
Let me start by saying I struggle with auditory learning. The performance on the Audible book was very good; the story is interesting BUT complicated. Many characters, many new types and situations and the characters often have multiple names or race names. Frankly, I got lost. That said, I bought the next book as an e-book and found I still cared about the characters and wanted to find out what happened. So, buyer be aware, if you learn well by listening and like fantasy, you’ll probably like this; otherwise stick to an ebook. One other comment, some of the phrases are repeated too often (e.g., “in companionable silence” - get a thesaurus…) and reflect a newer author and no editor. I also feel the author was too much in his own head and could have explained the races and interrelationships better. Skip the “waist length blonde hair” swishing and tell me who the Lyth are.

Historia
In ancient texts, there are stories about men who struck from the shadows, seemingly beyond the reach of death itself. These men were considered part angel, part demon. Their loyalty was to their families, their friends, and their kings. You crossed these men at your peril. And once crossed, there was no crossing back. They were fearless; men of honor who have been known throughout history by different names: Spartan, Viking, Samurai.

Entertaining - a little too maudlin
Revisado: 06-28-23
I enjoyed it - plenty of action and the winter scenes were well written. The angry tragically sad hero just seems a little overdone.

Such a wonderful listen! I often listen while I’m driving and it was so gripping I missed the exit to my house! It has everything for the avid science fiction reader and emotion without being maudlin. Everytime I thought I knew where the story was going, it took a turn. I can’t recommend this highly enough and, as a follower of Jesus Christ, I loved the connections I could find as the story progressed.

Historia
Lina Meisel, a retired librarian in Florida, is reading the newspaper one morning when she freezes. Her eyes lock on a photograph of a book she hasn’t seen in 65 years - a book she recognizes as The Book of Lost Names. The accompanying article discusses the looting of libraries by the Nazis across Europe during World War II - an experience Lina remembers well - and the search to reunite people with the texts stolen from them so long ago. The book in the photograph is one of the most fascinating cases.

A Wonderful Tale
Revisado: 12-21-22
You can walk in this story and see it as it unfolds. It is a sweet love story and yet captures the Nazi’s fearful hatred of the Jews. It shows good people and bad on both sides and makes them pretty real. The reason for 4 instead of 4 is, it’s a little far-fetched.

Historia
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.

Transported to a new world
Revisado: 04-08-22
From the very first words, Segovia brings you into a world few of us Americans have ever seen or experienced. Her ability to paint the landscape, create the characters and keep the thread of something magical is gripping. I walked through my days with Fransisco and Beatrice, Simon Opio (sp?) and smelled the smell of oranges and heard the bees. A marvelous story, well told.
I struggled a bit having two narrators but both are terrific. Not sure I really understood why two were needed.
I also found the (spoiler alert!) death scene long and repetitive.
Still - don’t miss this one!
