Historia
When Abbi Jacobson announced to friends and acquaintances that she planned to drive across the country alone, she was met with lots of questions and opinions: why wasn't she going with friends? Wouldn't it be incredibly lonely? The North route is better! Was it safe for a woman? The Southern route is the way to go! You should bring mace! And a common one...why? But Abbi had always found comfort in solitude and needed space to step back and hit the reset button.

I thought it was just me!
Revisado: 10-21-24
I know that’s a Brene Brown book title, but seriously- is Abbi Jacobson in my head? Overhearing the alibi I just created for why I didn’t do something or asking myself (ourselves?) who I’m arguing with and why?
Never have I seen self growth and the exhausting rumination that comes with it captured so honestly, vulnerably and with such grace and wit.
Awesome. Truly. In the way the word was designed to be used at the start. Loved it.

Short sharp empathy
Revisado: 07-08-24
No hours of listening to science and trauma - which can have its place - but when you need an empathetic, real life, digestible guide, this is the perfect heart medicine.

Human and needed
Revisado: 07-07-24
Parenting is the best and the hardest. Loving yourself through it is harder still. Such an important, hilarious, relatable window into another parent’s journey through feeling like a total failure and a total boss is exactly what we need as parents. Her vulnerability, openness and humour make it feel like an achievable mountain to climb with no lecturing, plenty of relatable real life stories (I’ve certainly been in so many of the situations she highlights!), and exactly the right blend of tears and humour, breaking and winning. A joy.

Magnificent.
Revisado: 06-18-24
Miraculous the clarity of the picture that Keegan paints, and the vision of past and future stories that she conjures, with so few words. Just beautiful- and so real that you know you have been, or know, these people.

Snuck up on me
Revisado: 01-13-24
I’d heard so many great things of Ann Patchett that I simply picked a book and hit play. After months in literary historical fiction, when I found myself in a dining room of dignitaries, I nearly made the grave error of turning away. Patchett captured me with some of the most nuanced and imperfectly perfect characters I’ve ever encountered. A masterclass in show-don’t-tell writing, I never wanted it to end or to say goodbye to any of them. Tears were shed, joy and anxiety felt. Listened to it in about a day and a half as I did not want to leave them for a moment. Magnificent narration. A must read.

Ailey Pearl Garfield grows up between the City in the north and summers spent in her mother’s small hometown of Chicasetta, Georgia. From an early age, she finds herself in a battle for belonging that’s made all the more difficult by a hurt in her past, as well as the whispers of women—her mother, Belle, her sister, Lydia, and a maternal line reaching back two centuries—that urge Ailey to succeed in their stead.

One of the greatest books I’ve ever read
Revisado: 01-06-24
Every word in this novel was empathetically, poetically and masterfully written, whether joyful, horrific, or heartbreaking. The unflinching commitment to bringing the archives to life of Jeffers was brave and clear. Her artistry and craft with words to breathe this life is nothing short of extraordinary. Despite its length, I did not want this novel to end and know I will return to her beautiful, human and nuanced characters time and time again. Everyone on the planet should read this book- it’s not only important, it’s a masterpiece.

Should be compulsory reading for every Australian
Revisado: 11-04-23
This is a real and human telling of one of the crucial, difficult parts of the history of our country which we are never taught in school. As Lily points out in her honouring of the wisdom of our First Nations’ Peoples, we must always begin with truth telling, however difficult those truths are, in order to heal and mocc be e forward in better ways.
Lily tells this story as though you are sitting at her kitchen table over many cups of tea, and maybe even a wine. It is heartbreaking, bravely vulnerable, and a call to action for us all to do better and to demand better. Her anger - still so disallowed in women - is not just deeply understandable, but refreshing. Thank you, Lily. Sharing your anger, your deepest hurts and the wrongs inflicted on you, alongside your hope, is a gift that we should all be abundantly grateful for. I certainly am.

Born to a teenaged single mother in a single wide trailer, life is not set fair for Demon as he escorts us on this, his journey through the modern perils of foster care, athletic success and addiction, the dizzying highs of true love, and the crushing losses that can accompany it.

Broke my heart in the most beautiful way
Revisado: 07-12-23
Magnificent. Listened to the whole 20-ish hours in just 3 days.
Right from the outset your heart will be with Damon; Kingslover’s ability to grow your empathy for the plight of those in our world often dismissed and laughed at is compassionate, masterful and (thankfully!) void of condescension.
My Australian ears were worried I’d be able to take the accent, but that was forgotten within minutes and I felt rightly chastised for the subconscious bias that led to that initial reaction within hours.
A stunning and poetic look at big political and sociology-economic issues in a form normally reserved for polemics.
Left it feeling better educated, more enlightened, and that the cracks it gave my heart have opened it, not shattered it. A true joy - a heartbreaker, yes- but still a true joy.

Historia
It begins with a painting won in a raffle: 15 sunflowers, hung on the wall by a woman who believes that men and boys are capable of beautiful things. And then there are two boys, Ellis and Michael, who couldn't be closer. And the boys become men, and then they meet Annie, and it changes nothing and everything. Tin Man sees Sarah Winman follow the acclaimed success of When God Was a Rabbit and A Year of Marvellous Ways with a love letter to human kindness and friendship, loss and living.

The magic she crafts with so few words is masterful. Having already enjoyed When God was a Rabbit, Still Life, and A Year of Marvellous Ways, I continue to be convinced that she is the greatest novelist of our time.
