Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Meh
Revisado: 09-15-21
It was ok but just ok. The beginning sucks you in and breaks your heart for this poor child then you are enthralled by her perseverance and strength only to have the last 4 hours draaaaaaaaag on and on so unnecessarily it seems and then the end just leave you so unsatisfied.
The writing and early structure isn't terrible so I gave it a 3 star. But if we could rate chapters there are several that would barely get one star.
That said, I would give the author another shot and see if improved.

Intriguing!
Revisado: 09-05-19
Started off strong and somewhere around the middle just when I started to lose a little interest (only a little) it picked back up and swept through with a bang!! Hard to put down. Fiona Davis is creeping her way, book by book, to my favorite author list! Sadskia Maareleveld has a tremendous talent for voices and accents. Flows seamlessly through male female tones. Looking for more books narrated by her.

After a long and eventful life, Allan Karlsson ends up in a nursing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he's still in good health, and in one day, he turns 100. A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey, involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash.

In this wickedly honest new work, Chelsea Handler casts the net wider with even funnier results, recalling the most noteworthy highs and lows of her life to date - including her efforts to diversify by dating red-haired men, her obsession with midgets, and the dog-sitting interlude in which her boyfriend became overly familiar with a Peekapoo.

Revisado: 11-16-15
I bought this book but never read it and a friend suggested I listen. She's funny but not LOL funny. More humorous. I just really found some of the stories too unrealistic and kind of sad and irritating. Like the bit about massages made no sense - any normal person would have left. In any case, I don't feel compelled to finish it so I won't but can't give it a terrible review. She's talented and maybe some of her other books are better this ones just not totally for me.

LOVE the narrator AND story
Revisado: 11-18-13
Would you listen to South of Broad again? Why?
Long but really well written and told. I just loved the story of these friends and was sad when was over. I keep wondering how the characters are doing and where things have gone since it ended. I could listen to this for another 20 hours.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Leo for sure. As a protagonist he was a fantastic character because he had so much charachter
What about Mark Deakins’s performance did you like?
His southern drawl is mesmerizing.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Too many to name seriously.

Historia
A debut of extraordinary distinction: through the trials of one unforgettable family, Ayana Mathis tells the story of the children of the Great Migration, a story of love and bitterness and the promise of a new America. In 1923, 15-year-old Hattie Shepherd flees Georgia and settles in Philadelphia, hoping for a chance at a better life. Instead, she marries a man who will bring her nothing but disappointment and watches helplessly as her firstborn twins succumb to an illness a few pennies could have prevented.

Great Narration, Good Story
Revisado: 10-30-13
What made the experience of listening to The Twelve Tribes of Hattie (Oprah's Book Club 2.0) the most enjoyable?
The narration was on point. I could really get into the story and loved the way the narrator was able to move in and out of the period dialect and tone.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. I actually liked the way it was broken up into short stories that were eventually strung together
Any additional comments?
The book did not leave me completely satisfied in the end. I felt the last quarter of the book were a bit rush and maybe not as well laid out as others.
