My friend absolutely loved this book so I am couching my review with that. Personally, I did not find the author relatable. I found her examples of situations and her responses did not land with me so her advice on how to control your reactions fell flat. I also felt like I have heard this advice before in many different forums. You can’t control other people, you can only control your reaction. Learn to let go. Don’t try to please everyone, self care, etc

Historia
Doctor Thorne is the third audiobook in Anthony Trollope's series known as the Chronicles of Barsetshire. Long regarded as one of Trollope's greatest works, it is a complex story of love, greed and illegitimacy. Set in fictional Barsetshire, it concerns the romantic challenges facing Doctor Thorne's penniless niece, Mary, and Frank Gresham, the only son of the impoverished squire of Greshambury. Mary falls in love with Frank but he is constrained by the need to marry well to restore the family fortunes.

I am so enjoying making my way through Trollope, this was not as good as the Way we Live Now but excellent nonetheless. Great narration

Historia
Blending intimate stories with the trenchant analysis that has become her signature, Manne shows why fatphobia has become a vital social justice issue. Over the last several decades, implicit bias has waned in every category, from race to sexual orientation, except one: body size. Manne examines how anti-fatness operates—how it leads us to make devastating assumptions about a person’s attractiveness, fortitude, and intellect, and how it intersects with other systems of oppression.

Good subject but didn’t love format
Revisado: 12-25-24
I found this to be meandering and too confessional. I would have liked it better with more structure, science, and objectivity. I also thought the “resist” GLP-1s gloss over to be much too simplistic, for many, fatness is a result of underlying issues (hormonal, etc) that we know little about. Saying: resist the urge to diet and satisfy your body, ignores the issue that our bodies are sending “false signals” to us. Anyway, I would have appreciated a more thorough discussion on that point.

From the publisher of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies comes a new tale of romance, heartbreak, and tentacled mayhem. Very disappointing
Revisado: 12-05-24
I found the monster theme to be overly forced onto the S&S story. I really wanted to love it but it fell flat. I found the narrator overly school marm in tone which made it a rather difficult listen. I am glad I finally got around to it though—it has been on my list for a while.

Ina with dimensions!
Revisado: 10-17-24
Ina makes herself multi-dimensional with this great story. I wish there was a little more about her childhood (clearly a painful piece of her history) because in the end, I was left thinking about her mother and Ina’s unresolved anger. I wanted to know so much more. That might be another book. Now I just want to drink a giant cosmo with Ina and ask her questions!
Very much worth a listen.

Historia
Why is Miami… Miami? What does the heartbreaking fate of the cheetah tell us about the way we raise our children? Why do Ivy League schools care so much about sports? What is the Magic Third, and what does it mean for racial harmony? In this provocative new work, Malcolm Gladwell returns to the subject of social epidemics and tipping points, this time with the aim of explaining the dark side of contagious phenomena. Through a series of gripping stories, Gladwell traces the rise of a new and troubling form of social engineering

A bit overly conclusory
Revisado: 10-13-24
I think the author would do well to remember: 2 things can be true at once. Life is not black and white. That doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t discuss the auxiliary consequences and original motives behind social engineering but there are also benefits. He discusses those in some cases (female CEOs, supporting minorities better in learning environments) but I disagree with his piece on college sports—yes, I think he makes great points but he rejects or is overly dismissive of the counter points. You can still make your point without rejecting the entirety of the counter argument. Also, I thought the opioid piece was very late to the party. This topic has been well covered already.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Historia
Generally considered to be his masterpiece, Vanity Fair is Thackeray's resplendent social satire that exposes the greed and corruption raging in England during the turmoil of the Napoleonic wars. Subtitled "A Novel Without a Hero", it traces the changing fortunes of two unforgettable women: the scheming opportunist Becky Sharp, one of literature's most resourceful, engaging, and amoral heroines, and her foil, the faithful, naive Amelia Sedley.

Glad to have listened to this classic but was not a fan
Revisado: 12-27-22
I have heard references to Vanity Fair my whole life so I wanted to read the book. This was perfect on audible because it is so long so I listened while cooking, cleaning, driving, etc. I was disappointed in the story though. I found it quite sexist and paternalistic—of course I took into account the time but when compared to Austen and Trollope, the story and characters were far inferior.
