Revisado: 03-23-25
This isn’t the typical, everything works out for the hero. Great story, refreshing twist on the fantasy genre and characters and writing that will stick with you much longer.

Ending of a series that does the series justice
Revisado: 08-19-24
It’s rare that a great book in a series has an ending that matches the engagement of the series. This is the closest book to doing that. The others are Harry Potter and 3 Body problem

Good but feels like a filler
Revisado: 03-31-24
Good book as Brandon is ought to write. He finds ways to still surprise the reader even with the abundance of fantasy tropes and stories to follow. However this book could easily have been shrunken into a 3rd of its length and/or bandied with one of the other books.

Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

A bit cliche but makes up for it
Revisado: 03-15-24
I was looking for a fantasy - world building story, something akin to Game Of Thrones or Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archives. So I was a bit disappointed and frustrated when at first I was reading this book which had been touted as a fantasy book on the same level, and quickly saw it turn into a cliche romance chick flick (Twilight anyone?).
You know the cliche, cute girl falls for dangerous, broody handsome guy, who for some reason, has no other love interest but her. And half the plot starts to center around how good looking he is. We get it, he’s tall and muscular. But the book saves itself by bringing in noteworthy action scenes and twists at the end. I was intent on giving it 2 stars because of the cliche tropes but the satisfying twists in the end turned things around. Funny, I think I would be open to reading the sequel. I just hope we can get over describing physical features of the romantic interests and focus on things that move the story along.
I’ve also made a personal note to myself, this is a book that feels like it’s for a female audience. So for guys out there, bear that in mind. You might find yourself in my shoes too. Reading the book and constantly rolling your eyes, like oh, here we go again, didn’t we see this coming? I imagine women must feel a similar way when they read books with male leads though in all fairness. But I do miss books like Harry Potter. GOT, Three Body Problem, and the like.

Historia
Ken Follett's World Without End was a global phenomenon, a work of grand historical sweep beloved by millions of readers and acclaimed by critics. Fall of Giants is his magnificent new historical epic. The first novel in The Century Trilogy, it follows the fates of five interrelated families - American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh - as they move through the world-shaking dramas of the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the struggle for women's suffrage.

More History Than Expected
Revisado: 11-11-23
I loved Ken Follets Pillars of the Earth and was really looking forward to this book. However it felt like I was reading an abridged history on WW1 and the characters were there to keep the history going. I read that this will end up being a Trilogy and I wonder if that’s why this book feels drawn out. Almost like he was saving his punches for the next book.

Historia
Drawing on new research, including the diaries, memoirs, and personal letters of both Lenin and his friends, Victor Sebestyen's unique biography - the first in English in nearly two decades - is not only a political examination of one of the most important historical figures of the 20th century but a portrait of Lenin the man. Unexpectedly, Lenin was someone who loved nature, hunting, and fishing and could identify hundreds of species of plants, a despotic ruler whose closest ties and friendships were with women.

Humanizes the Villain
Revisado: 07-15-23
I think this is what Audiobooks are meant for; that is for listening to autobiographies of historical figures. I know for me, I couldn’t picture myself going to a bookstore to pick up a book on Lenin. But an audiobook like this, that was so captivating through and through, made me feel like I was watching one of those well made, top production, Netflix documentaries. This was just all audio. I highly recommend this book if you were ever curious to learn of what started the communist revolution, or learning about how dictators can get to power (fyi it’s not so hard), or what life in Russia was like 100 years ago, or seeing the effect one human being can have on history, and many many more insights. I’m already looking up the next “great” figure I can read up on.

If you are someone that can appreciate a well written book with characters that feel more alive than people you know, give this book a try. Be warned, it’s not for the faint of heart. I genuinely feel my level of empathy has increased significantly after reading this book. And isn’t that what a good story should do? Help you truly understand a life you could’ve never lived yourself, like truly truly understand a different life from yours?

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

Enraptured
Revisado: 03-18-21
This is not the type of book I would usually pick up to read, but I’m so glad I gave it a chance. To start of with, this book showed up on my radar has highly recommended to me by Audible. So I figured, why not, it’s only 11 hours at 1x listening speed. I had my doubts because many times I’ve been jaded by enthusiastic reviewers. Don’t you hate that haha. Well, this lives up to its reviews- which is probably the biggest compliment you could give a book. It’s gripping, I felt for all the survivors each time. I found myself hating certain survivors who wouldn’t pull their weight (sometimes literally). I won’t add any spoilers but yes, well worth the read. Evolution made us gods. How else could 28 humans cross the antártica and live to tell the story
