Historia
When Norm Macdonald, one of the greatest stand-up comics of all time, was approached to write a celebrity memoir, he flatly refused, calling the genre “one step below instruction manuals.” Norm then promptly took a two-year hiatus from stand-up comedy to live on a farm in northern Canada. When he emerged he had under his arm a manuscript, a genre-smashing book about comedy, tragedy, love, loss, war, and redemption. When asked if this was the celebrity memoir, Norm replied, “Call it anything you damn like.”

Interesting and puzzling.
Revisado: 02-03-25
I have always loved Norm. He is completely unique. I was hoping the book would enlighten me on his origin and life.
It did not. It seemed to start to and then went completely off the rails. The story went from compelling to unhinged.
I have no idea what I heard. However, I still enjoyed his reading and the quirky, unique prose. I am glad I bought it, but in the end, it left me wanting his real story, in his voice and words, and that does not exist. So the book has left a void it created.

Historia
In this intimate and open account—nothing like any rock-and-roll memoir you’ve ever read—Alex Van Halen shares his personal story of family, friendship, music and brotherly love in a remarkable tribute to his beloved brother and band mate. In his rough yet sweet voice, Alex recounts the brothers’ childhood, first in the Netherlands and then in working class Pasadena, California, with an itinerant musician father and a very proper Indonesian-born mother.

THE best VanHalen book of them all.
Revisado: 01-27-25
As a massive fan of VH, I did not know how little I actually knew about Alex and the early and private lives of the brothers.
Alex's very well written and extremely well read account is unbelievably sensitive, personal and direct. His love for Ed and their "us against the world together" brotherhood is the greatest insite of the book. I knew they were close. I had no idea why or how close.
I especially loved when Alex would snicker at, or put some extra heat on an anecdote he was reading. it happened quite a bit, and it was awesome.
I did not think I could love Ed more, I do. I knew I liked Alex but did not know very much about him as a person. Now I do, and I love him too.
Great stories. Great history. Above all, an account of two amazing brothers who fought, collaborated, worked hard, messed up and achieved their dreams. And most of all, always had their own backs! Great book!

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

A very well written tour through a very difficult life.
Revisado: 02-20-24
I raised my kids on iCarly and especially enjoyed Jeanette's character. I also had a tinge of intuition that acting/show business was not her happy place. I had NO idea....
This is well written autobio that deals with way more then I ever imagined. However, her writing draws you in and really paints a vivid picture of her world thru many stages.
I learned so much about show business, dysfunctional families, addiction, eating disorders and recovery.
I hope she writes more in the future as this book was amazing.
Her read of it was much needed, as nobody could voice this without the tone being off. She did great. I especially like her subdued Maranda "impression/not impression" when she quotes her friend.

Raised Eyebrows is the bittersweet story of the last years in the life of Groucho Marx, told by a young Marx Brothers fan who was fortunate enough to work for Groucho as his personal secretary and archivist, right inside Marx's Beverly Hills home. In addition to getting to know his hero, the author was able to spend quality time with Zeppo, Gummo, Mae West, George Burns, Bob Hope, Jack Lemmon, SJ Perelman, Steve Allen, and scores of other luminaries of stage, screen, TV, and literature.

Historia
Here, in his own words, is the true story of America's wildest flying hero, of his extraordinary heroism, and of his greatest battle of all-the fight to survive. The World War II air war in the Pacific needed tough men like Colonel Pappy Boyington and his Black Sheep Squadron. The legendary Marine Corps officer and his bunch of misfits, outcasts, and daredevils gave a new definition to "hell-raising" - on the ground and in the skies.

Revisado: 10-28-19
This is an amazing Book. So much history, insight and entertainment. I loved every word. My only complaint is the reader. He was such a bad choice for "Gramps". Not only a bad fit in tone but every line he read ended in a weird breathless way that was extremely annoying and far off the character of "Gramps" Boyington. Still a great audio book!!!!!

Historia
The USS Seawolf was one of the greatest submarine raiders of all time. Having narrowly avoided the attack on Pearl Harbor the Seawolf set out for the seas of the Pacific to wreak havoc on Japanese shipping. Joseph Melvin Eckberg was on the Seawolf from her maiden voyage and remained with her until January 1943. As chief radioman he was instrumental in assisting Captain Frederick Warder to find and destroy enemy targets. From the claustrophobia of being trapped under water and the overwhelming fear of depth charges to the joys of aiding the war-effort and the camaraderie on the ship.

Historia
Buster Keaton (1895-1966) was a brilliant comedian and filmmaker who conceived, wrote, directed, acted, and even edited most of his ten feature films and nineteen short comedies, which are perhaps the finest silent pictures ever made. With a face of stone and a mind that engineered breathtakingly intricate moments of slapstick, Keaton has become an icon of the American cinema. Marion Meade's definitive biography explores his often brutal childhood acting experiences, the making of his masterpieces, his shame at his own lack of education, his life-threatening alcoholism, and his turbulent marriages.

Informative! Compelling! Hilarious! Sad. WONDERFUL
Revisado: 04-03-19
I thought I knew a little about the people, places and history of American comedy. Apparently, I knew VERY little. This book is an impressive and comprehensive account of comedic and American history. It is VERY well laid out and constructed, and equally well researched and informed. I enjoyed every minute of it, and when it was through, I knew and understood more about not only my favorite people past and present, but the evolution and universe that spawned, shaped, evolved and sometimes consumed them. I simply cannot recommend this book highly enough. Mr. Nesteroff did a masterful job in it's research and construction and a fine job in it's reading. This is THE best book I have in my Audible library.

Historia
With the Soviet Union's launch of the first Sputnik satellite in 1957, the Cold War soared to new heights as Americans feared losing the race into space. The X-15 Rocket Plane tells the enthralling yet little-known story of the hypersonic X-15, the winged rocket ship that met this challenge and opened the way into human-controlled spaceflight. Drawing on interviews with those who were there, Michelle Evans captures the drama and excitement of, yes, rocket science.

Revisado: 02-06-19
This is a great book FULL of facts and history. A very exciting and informative dive into the X-15s and the people that made this historic and groundbreaking project go. A must read for any space and or aerospace buff. The reading was very bad and the voice affect on quoted lines was hilarious and tedious at the same time. I finally dialed up the speed to 1.25 and it became tolerable. The information, stories and insight are WELL worth the trek.
