Out of this World
Revisado: 07-09-22
I had no idea Higuera would transport me to an alternate reality, but I am glad she did. Her attention to creative details, while maintaining family-centured values, guides the reader on an unexpected journey to a strangely familiar place. Bravo!

Historia
Lupe Wong is going to be the first female pitcher in the Major Leagues. She's also championed causes her whole young life. Some worthy...like expanding the options for race on school tests beyond just a few bubbles. And some not so much...like complaining to the BBC about the length between Doctor Who seasons. Lupe needs an A in all her classes in order to meet her favorite pitcher, Fu Li Hernandez, who's Chinacan/Mexinese just like her. So when the horror that is square dancing rears its head in gym? Obviously she's not gonna let that slide.

Juvenile angst plus unique family origins.
Revisado: 06-06-22
Higuera pulls her character through a world of hurt and aloness. I'm not sure which one of us was more relieved when the story came to a resolution.

Historia
Liberty Johansen is going to change the way we look at the night sky. Most people see the old constellations, the things they've been told to see. But Liberty sees new patterns, pictures, and possibilities. She's an exception. Some other exceptions: Her dad, who gave her the stars. Who moved out months ago and hasn't talked to her since. Her mom, who's happier since he left, even though everyone thinks she should be sad and lonely. And her sister, who won't go outside their house.

Not What I Expected
Revisado: 05-24-22
King's story drew me in with genuine character descriptions and kept me listening with an unexpected plot. I was the 13 year old protagonist and a worried grandama-aged listener at the same time. Straight forward, realistic, and compelling.

Extraordinary
Revisado: 05-10-22
Way beyond ordinary, the settings, creatures, and details of this story evoke a new world whose look and feel are unique. The challenges they face are familiar, but oh so disguised in this foreign territory.

Waiting for the Mail
Revisado: 05-10-22
Waiting for the mail is never easy. I didn't think I had the patience to Wade through this book of letters. By the midpoint, absorbed in the distinct voices of each correspondent, I felt the drama of their stories. I joined the pen pals in their separate agonies and the anticipation a letter can induce.

Historia
A mesmerizing tale of art and passion in Belle Époque France. As a woman, aspiring sculptor Camille Claudel has plenty of critics, especially her ultra-traditional mother. But when Auguste Rodin makes Camille his apprentice - and his muse - their passion inspires groundbreaking works. Yet Camille’s success is overshadowed by her lover’s rising star, and her obsessions cross the line into madness. Rodin’s Lover brings to life the volatile love affair between one of the era’s greatest artists and a woman entwined in a tragic dilemma she cannot escape.
