The ratings and views are off the chart. The fans just can't get enough. The dungeon gets more dangerous each day. But in a grinder designed to chew up and spit out crawlers by the millions, Carl and Princess Donut need to work harder than ever just to survive. They call it the Over City. A sprawling, once-thriving metropolis devastated by a mysterious calamity. But these streets are far from abandoned. An undead circus trawls the ruins. Murdered prostitutes rain from the sky. An ancient spell is finally ready to reveal its dark purpose.

Entertaining, but....
Revisado: 03-12-25
Just finished #2 right after #1 and I wish I could say it was just as good. The problem is that all of the laugh out loud humor is gone and this is more like a regular game. There is some humor but most of it is straightforward gaming with a new wrinkle thrown in (Quests). I didn't like the actual quests and preferred the straight out battles but I guess that would be boring after a while as well. I'm also not that thrilled with the new characters added so far but hopefully they will come alive in the books to come. The narration and sound are fantastic again and I will keep going. Just started #3 so I am keeping my fingers crossed that the magic of the 1st one can be repeated.

Historia
A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

Didn't expect to like so much
Revisado: 03-06-25
I now see why everyone is talking about this book. The world building is amazing, characters are fantastic and it's funnier than all heck. I found myself laughing out loud multiple times and that's rare for me when it comes to audiobooks. The gaming aspects (points, strength, potions, health points) are slightly annoying at first but after a bit, you'll get used to it. I'm definitely glad I listened to this rather than reading because the narration and sound is maybe the best I've heard in over 300 audiobooks. Jeff Hays is simply incredible. I can't believe he does most, if not all of the voices here. My only complaint is that it's probably a tad too long but I still loved it. Glad to hear Seth McFarlan and Universal have bought the rights as he seems perfect to adapt it.
Glrrp, glrrp everyone!!

Imaginative, funny and inciteful.
Revisado: 02-10-25
I was shocked at how much I liked this book. The premise, mulitple husbands coming down from a magical attic, could have been corny and stupid but not at the skilled hands of Holly Gramazio. I had no clue where it was going and looked forward to the next husband making his entrance. I also appreciated that it wasn't "anti-man" but instead gave a pretty balanced story of what we all expect our spouses and lives would and should be. Anyway, just enjoy the book for what it is and I think you'll be happy you did so. Shout out to Miranda Raison for the great narration.

Could do worse on the Plus Catalog. The writing is pretty good and there is a very decent twist at the end that you probably won't see coming. If you are in between credits, you could do a lot worse.

Excellent writing and narration
Revisado: 01-10-25
This is a well written, epic book that takes you through the turbulent 60's and 70's. I never realized how many women served and died in Vietnam so this was an eye opening experience. I will say though, the book was riveting while in Nam but got a bit cliched and drawn out when the main character gets home. However, she was a fasinating and very troubled young women who was worth the 14 hours spent with her. Julia Whelan expertly brings her to life and actually does a great job with all of the male characters as well. Overall, I can see why it's been on all of the best of 2024 lists and is apparently being turned in to a movie (although it should be an Apple + or HBO series if there was any justice in the world).

Historia
Patrick, or Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP, for short), has always loved his niece, Maisie, and nephew, Grant. That is, he loves spending time with them when they come out to Palm Springs for weeklong visits, or when he heads home to Connecticut for the holidays. But in terms of caretaking and relating to two children, no matter how adorable, Patrick is, honestly, overwhelmed. So when tragedy strikes and Maisie and Grant lose their mother and Patrick's brother has a health crisis of his own, Patrick finds himself suddenly taking on the role of primary guardian.

An R rated Sitcom
Revisado: 01-10-25
I tried this one after listening to a bunch of "dark" ones in a row (All of the Colors of the Dark, etc.) to lighten the mood a bit.
It didn't disappoint but I did have some issues as it played out like an R rated sitcom. Did I smile a few times? Yes. Did it pull at my heart strings a few times? Yes. But, if you took out the mild gay sex banter and bad words, you basically have Mr. Mom or Mrs. Doubtfire. My other issue is that the book is way too long with several "endings." Right when I thought it was coming to a close, (because of yet another long speech about life, loss and love), I realized I had 3 hours left to go. Ultimately, I was entertained but feel that a bit of editing would have helped greatly.

Overly Praised Mystery
Revisado: 11-19-24
I listened to this one due to all of the "best of the year" nominations and quite frankly was disappointed. Firstly, it takes a long time to get going and unfortunately the characters aren't interesting enough during the slow beginning. Once the main story finally kicks in, it does so with a whimper and never ramps up. If you are going to have a slow burn of a novel, the main characters better be damn interesting and, other than the female detective, none of them were. By no means is this a bad novel, it is very well written, but I just don't get all of the hype for what turned out to be a very "basic" missing person story. To me, All the Colors of the Dark is still the one to beat.

Worst main character ever!
Revisado: 10-22-24
Boy did the main character bug me in this one. All Emma talks about is protecting her children and friends but contiinually has their lives threatened with every dump decision she makes. In the beginning of the book, she explains that she didn't leave her abusive husband that she dispises because she didn't want to be cast out of Austrailia's upper class and be a poor single mother. What!!! They are extremely rich and she would have gotten a boat load in the divorce. Oh, and she is apparently very attractive as well. Her next dumb move is to help out her gang boss wife neighbor who she has only known for a few weeks and has been warned to stay away from by her husband. But no, she goes forth anyway putting her young children and best friend in harms way. Sorry, I couldn't stand this woman. However, Tamala Shelton did an excellent job with the narration and tried desperatly to make Emma in to an actual human being. Good on you Tamala!!

Heart Stopping it is not
Revisado: 10-22-24
A Simple Lie is simply written. I like to call these types of books "Lifetime Movie Books." The story, writting, and characters are all very bland with way too many coincidences and a laughable ending. There is also a very unintentionally funny plot dump by one of the main characters that explains the whole mystery in one paragraph. Think Bond villan explaining his dasterdly plan to Bond at the end of the movie. I also have to question the choice of narrator. I don't usually criticize them but Lauren Ezzo sounds like she is in a 1940's gangster movie most of the time. Her delivery is awkward at best and her accents are horrible. The only good thing I can say is that it was free.

Historia
Duchess Day Radley is a 13-year-old self-proclaimed outlaw. Rules are for other people. She is the fierce protector of her five-year-old brother, Robin, and the parent to her mother, Star, a single mom incapable of taking care of herself, let alone her two kids. Walk has never left the coastal California town where he and Star grew up. He may have become the chief of police, but he’s still trying to heal the old wound of having given the testimony that sent his best friend, Vincent King, to prison decades before. And he's in overdrive protecting Duchess and her brother.

Beautifully written drama
Revisado: 10-22-24
For those looking for a simple/predicable mystery, this probably isn't for you. This is an extremely well written character study of people in a small town that are all affected by a tragedy and how it shapes their lives. If you liked All The Colors of the Dark, you will like this one as well.
