Engrossing and Gross
Revisado: 05-04-08
This book brought me right into the plot and into the age of cathedral building. The amount of technical and period detail the author weaved into the story is truly remarkable. However, he overdid it with regard to the wanton brutality and sexuality present in the story. It seemed to me that the author's mind was really wrapped around sexual acts and sexual arousal. It was truly disgusting to be engrossed by the plot and then grossed out by the authors thoughts of either rape or sensuality which go well beyond what was necessary to convey to the reader. I found myself often skipping through the "sex scenes". The book would have been a beautiful masterpiece without these scenes. I could have understood one or two rapes, certainly believable as possible for the period, without the author going into great detail about the perpetrator's thoughts. Nevertheless, if you can stomache skipping through about a dozen scenes that reek of gratuitous sex, you will find treasure in the novel. I would have given five stars if it were more tempered.

Keeping The Message Alive
Revisado: 01-03-08
Narrated very well. I had low expectations--but these readings show I had nothing to worry about! I have to say, this narration has become a part of my daily routine now, and it challenges me to think through scripture carefully. The daily readings are not too long and I can let my imagination take me to the feet of Jesus or to Mount Caramel while listening to the words...
No regrets.

Historia
It's not the dead that seem strange to Quirke. It's the living. One night, after a few drinks at an office party, Quirke shuffles down into the morgue where he works and finds his brother-in-law, Malachy, altering a file he has no business even reading. Odd enough in itself to find Malachy there, but the next morning, when the haze has lifted, it looks an awful lot like his brother-in-law, the esteemed doctor, was in fact tampering with a corpse—and concealing the cause of death.

A Good Listen
Revisado: 01-03-08
I received much enjoyment from listening to this book. It has a very different setting from my midwestern US life, and the character development is outstanding. Hats off to T. Dalton who narrated superbly. While he is not in the class with Scott Brick and others, he is easy to listen to. The book itself has dark and brooding tones. If you are looking for an uplifting and enlightening book, look elsewhere. But if you want your imagination to be stimulated, as well as your intellect, this book is a good choice.

Historia
James Gleick has long been fascinated by the making of science: how ideas order visible appearances, how equations can give meaning to molecular and stellar phenomena, how theories can transform what we see. In Chaos, he chronicled the emergence of a new way of looking at dynamic systems; in Genius, he portrayed the wondrous dimensions of Richard Feymnan's mind.

I thought it was good
Revisado: 08-28-05
I do not agree with the previous reviewers. The author brought the personality and presence of Newton out in the only way one could--through meticulous research. The confllicts between Newton and Hook, and the descriptions of a man viewing the world in ways none before him could were very facinating and I listened to the book twice to hear the story again. If you are interested in genius and particularly mathematics and physics and how a great man of learning dealt with his genius in his own time, you will enjoy this book.
I will say that I have not read the author's other works, so I can't compare to them. But if they are better as the previous reviewers have indicated then I'm going to give them a listen also.
