This Story’s Body Count is Way Too High
Revisado: 11-28-24
I have listened to the trilogy of stories and I am sad to say that I was disappointed. The amount of time spent scheming and killing overtakes so much of this story. I was hopeful that the story would be more than crowns and lands to fight over but that’s what it boiled down to. I make pictures in my head when I hear things and sorrowfully, even the “shero” of this story in my mind is a bloodthirsty killer. Lots of killing, I wish there was more building. Lastly, Bahni Turpin was a superb reader for the first 2 books. I know Cynthia Erivo has more popularity but she was not a better choice for this particular job.

Historia
Dr. Ala Stanford knew she wanted to be a doctor by the time she was eight years old. But role models were few and far between in her working-class North Philly neighborhood. Her teachers were dismissive, and the realities of racism, sexism, and poverty threatened to derail her at every turn. Nevertheless, thanks to her faith, family, and the sheer strength of her will, today she is one of the vanishingly small number of Black women surgeons in America—and an unrelenting force in the fight for health justice.

Complexities of Families Affected by Sexism. Racism & Poverty Yet Finding Love & Perserverence
Revisado: 02-09-24
I found myself loving and hating the ways that the characters treated each other but with the unfolding of the story and the detailed characterization I understood why. There were so many pressures on the family both societally and self imposed. I was glad that they found a way to endure together. The author wrote a great book and the voice actor brought it vividly and robustly to life.

Historia
Thelonious "Monk" Ellison's writing career has bottomed out: his latest manuscript has been rejected by seventeen publishers, which stings all the more because his previous novels have been "critically acclaimed." He seethes on the sidelines of the literary establishment as he watches the meteoric success of We's Lives in Da Ghetto, a first novel by a woman who once visited "some relatives in Harlem for a couple of days."

A Sorrowful Tale Laced with a Biting Satire
Revisado: 12-31-23
I think it has been a long time since I have felt so many conflicting emotions about a main character. Monk manages to make me hate him, pity him, love him, root for him and hope for his downfall. This is an unsettling book that asks very real questions. I appreciate it. The writing is excellent and the performance is superb.

Historia
Amanda and Clay head out to a remote corner of Long Island expecting a vacation: a quiet reprieve from life in New York City, quality time with their teenage son and daughter, and a taste of the good life in the luxurious home they’ve rented for the week. But a late-night knock on the door breaks the spell. Ruth and G. H. are an older couple—it’s their house, and they’ve arrived in a panic. They bring the news that a sudden blackout has swept the city. But in this rural area—with the TV and internet now down, and no cell phone service—it’s hard to know what to believe.

Historia
Zuberi, Uzochi, and Lencho were among the first of a new generation of Nubians to awaken to extraordinary powers—gifts their parents lost when they fled their island home decades ago. And now that Uzochi has been declared a Nubian catalyst, everyone expects him to lead. But what should be a time of rebirth and celebration is instead one of turmoil. The so-called sky king, Krazen St. John, is bent on harnessing Nubian gifts for himself, and he has assembled a special, superhuman militia to do his bidding, putting a ruthless Lencho in charge.

Great story cinematically told…
Revisado: 12-17-23
I really hope this story makes it to the big screen. It has implications for what we can do in community as well as what we can do individually to bring about a divine world that accommodates all of our gifts. The villains in these stories are familiar because they are us but so are the sheroes and heroes. I loved these first 2 installments. Looking forward to the 3rd.

This was a nice sweet Africance (cause they’re not Roman) with characters that had complex situations that they met with compassion, intelligence and love. I enjoyed the content and the performances. 🖤🖤
