Conquest is an expert on the topic of Stalin and the interim war period in Soviet Russia. This would have been a 5 star but the reader's terrible impressions of pompous accents drove me nuts.

love the topic but this was a painful, confusing slog that leaves everyrhing to the imagination.

This is more than a recount of the battle of The Somme, with exquisite taste the author has used the letters, journals, and official papers of those in the battle to tell the story. These make up the bulk of the book and the authors voice is sparse. Simply brilliantly done. Bravo!

Of this rather large work, two chapters are dedicated to the battle of Jutland. Most of this text is the author arguing how everyone involved, from the PM to the Kaiser, blamed his grandpa and how his grandpa was the hero of Jutland. Skip this book if you want unbiased history.

This book barely touches on America's role in the first war. It is written well enough but gives little to no information about the war itself.

The absolutely must read book about the Romanovs and the history of Russia. If you want to understand Russia, and what is currently happening, read this.

If you want the real story this seems to be stolen from, read Peter Hamilton's The Night's Dawn Trilogy. Also, the reader needs to seriously blow her damned nose!

There are two kinds of people that have read this book; those that say they like this book, and those that aren't lying. I whole heartedly believe that those people who like this book are the same ones that are on trial for lewd acts with fish.

I was okay for the first three hours. Hours 4-10 was akin to talking a walk with a tiny pebble in my shoe. Eleven through twenty I can say was exactly like running with a giant blister on my heel yet nothing I could do about it. Those hours between twenty one and thirty one caused the same kind of gut ripping pain as giving birth to my eight pound son without pain medication, but took longer. The last eleven hours were so monotonous that my brain shut down, woke up, realized I was still listening and began to pulse with such pain I thought I might have a tumor...I decided to call it James.

Seriously, if someone tells you to read this, don't. Quit the class, change professors, or even majors, become a doctor, they don't have to read this.

A found diary, a devastating natural disaster, and really big things that not only go bump in the night but hurtle rocks at you and happily licks your bones clean. What more could a person want in a story? A first person account, through a found diary, of a massacre is not only scary but so well written that I whimpered in fear. What makes this book so truly terrifying is that Max added amazing primate facts and true accounts of Big Foot sightings to his narrative. If you want a good scare, clean prose, and a cohesive story then this book is for you.

This is terrible. There is no narrative so it sounds like an old 40s style noir but without the drama or coherent story line., Literally a terrible waste of time.
