In Teaching with Poverty in Mind: What Being Poor Does to Kids' Brains and What Schools Can Do About It, veteran educator and brain expert Eric Jensen takes an unflinching look at how poverty hurts children, families, and communities across the United States and demonstrates how schools can improve the academic achievement and life readiness of economically disadvantaged students.

All Educational Professionals Should Read
Revisado: 04-08-20
One of many thought provoking quotes from this book—which pretty much sums up the contents: “Until your school finds ways to address the social, emotional, and health-related challenges that your kids face everyday, academic excellence is just a politically correct but highly unlikely goal.” Will definitely be implementing the ideas and strategies of this book into my school psychology framework. So glad I came across this book!

Historia
Decades before the American Revolution, Benjamin Franklin lamented that English settlers were constantly fleeing over to the Indians - but Indians almost never did the same. Tribal society has been exerting an almost gravitational pull on Westerners for hundreds of years, and the reason lies deep in our evolutionary past as a communal species. The most recent example of that attraction is combat veterans who come home to find themselves missing the incredibly intimate bonds of platoon life.

Thought-provoking
Revisado: 03-19-20
This is a great book. Author does a phenomenal job narrating. I especially liked his analysis of trauma and the insights he gives. A lot of the material was really surprising for me, and I think many people would benefit from listening—especially if interested in getting a point of view regarding the importance of community that is so inherent to the human condition—that is thoroughly researched and uses critical thinking skills that are worth emulating.
