Historia
Brighton, 1950. The body of a girl is found cut into three pieces. Detective Inspector Edgar Stephens is convinced the killer is mimicking a famous magic trick—the Zig Zag Girl. The inventor of the trick, Max Mephisto, is an old war friend of Edgar’s. They served together in a shadowy unit called the Magic Men, a special ops troop that used stage tricks to confound the enemy. Max is on the traveling show circuit, touring seaside towns with ventriloquists, sword-swallowers and dancing girls.

Wonderfully engaging “real” people characterizations with nice character developments as the story progressed. Surprise solution to the mystery - it is a real page Turner.

Excruciatingly beautiful
Revisado: 07-18-24
I was 12 when this Excruciatingly beautiful book was released. For several years of my childhood I had dutifully hidden under my school desk with the other frightened children when we had the nuclear war drills. I am grateful Walter Miller’s son made it possible for his father’s book to be recorded so beautifully. I am powerfully reminded to live each moment Simply for goodness sake and to continue a prayer that the warmongers may wake up in time for the world to live and die as long as the sun shines without what now seems to be a more than possible inevitable nuclear ending.

Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Spectacular, moving and passionately written
Revisado: 04-02-24
Spectacular, moving, passionately written, and excellently researched. This is a deeply moving depiction of what it must have been like to be a woman, especially an assertively individual woman in the first century CE.

Deeply touching, also shocking
Revisado: 12-06-20
This beautiful work was Deeply touching, but also horrifyingly shocking re: details of Nazi’s totally dehumanizing crimes during WW2.
Depicting the humanity of Autism and also aphasia was masterpiece. Rimmer also masterfully explores relationship crises, complications and most of all the deep power of all kinds of relationship love.
