Historia
This brilliantly readable work of history tells the bizarre story of the Ottoman Empire as seen through the lives of its extravagant and tyrannical sultans. With their absolute power, their love of pomp, and their overwhelming venality and corruption, rarely has a great empire been ruled by such grotesque and awesome figures. For 400 years, they fought wars, terrorized their subjects, made Turkey into a great empire, and then allowed her to decline into ostentatious and impotent decay.

Great Narration
Revisado: 11-17-22
Davidson does a fabulous job pronouncing words from a variety of dialects and effectively portrays the native accents of the historical characters in the book.
Barber does nearly as well using the Ottoman Sultans as the thread tying the Empire's history together

Historia
Ibn Saud grew to manhood living the harsh traditional life of the desert nomad, a life that had changed little since the days of Abraham. Equipped with immense physical courage, he fought and won, often with weapons and tactics not unlike those employed by the ancient Assyrians, a series of astonishing military victories over a succession of enemies much more powerful than himself. Over the same period, he transformed himself from a minor sheikh into a revered king and elder statesman, courted by world leaders such as Churchill and Roosevelt.

Good listen, mostly
Revisado: 11-15-22
I appreciate there are some difficult to pronounce Arabic words, and the narrator did fine with those. However, he struggled elsewhere throughout the book, usually emphasizing the wrong syllables.
Great content, very informative but some anti-Semitism sneaks in, coloring presentation of the facts. Made me wonder what else may have been misrepresented

Historia
This masterful audiobook is the first comprehensive reappraisal of the Vichy France regime for over 20 years. France was occupied by Nazi Germany between 1940 and 1944, and the exact nature of France's role in the Vichy years is only now beginning to come to light. One of the main reasons that the Vichy history is difficult to tell is that some of France's most prominent politicians, including President Mitterand, have been implicated in the regime. This has meant that public access to key documents has been denied and it is only now that an objective analysis is possible.

This was a deeply impactful story. It would have been incredibly helpful if the narration had pronounced French names and words correctly.

Historia
What really happened to the billions of dollars worth of gold seized by Nazi Germany? What role did the Swiss government play and what are the implications of neutrality during wartime? The author addresses these questions, presents the case for and against Switzerland, and applies the lessons learned from World War II to the broader issue of companies - and countries - profiting during wartime.

Revisado: 06-02-22
Very interesting content, but the narrator ruined the listening experience. The absence of paused made it nearly impossible to distinguish between headings and the body of the paragraph. The monotone covered the significance of certain passages and poor pronunciation made it difficult to pick up key words.

Historia
Continuing where Thus Spoke Zarathustra left off, Nietzsche's controversial work Beyond Good and Evil is one of the most influential philosophical texts of the 19th century and one of the most controversial works of ideology ever written. Attacking the notion of morality as nothing more than institutionalised weakness, Nietzsche criticises past philosophers for their unquestioning acceptance of moral precepts. Nietzsche tried to formulate what he called "the philosophy of the future".

Historia
On December 7, 1941, the nation of Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and prompted the United States’ entry into the bloodiest war in human history. Americans have long debated the cause of the bombing; many have argued that the attack was a brilliant Japanese military coup or a failure of US intelligence agencies or even a conspiracy of the Roosevelt administration. But despite the attention historians have paid to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the truth about that fateful day has remained a mystery - until now.

Not very good history
Revisado: 02-20-22
Interesting story that benefits from insights not available to everyone. However, the author's prejudices from personal ties come across pretty evidently. White was clearly a spy, but to attribute Pearl Harbor, and ultimately the US's involvement in WW II is an incredible overreach.

Historia
Christmas 1913: In Britain, people are debating a new dance called ‘the tango’. In Germany, they are fascinated by the wedding of the Kaiser’s daughter to the Duke of Brunswick. Little did they know that their world was on ‘The Eve of War’, a catastrophe that was to engulf the continent, cost millions of lives, and change the course of the century. And yet behind the scenes, the Great Powers were marching towards what they thought was an inevitable conflict.

Historia
Switzerland is a remarkable country, half of whose territory lies in the Alps. This is the history of one Swiss alpine village. Raising cattle and making cheese brought modest wealth to its struggling peasants until a destructive Napoleonic invasion brought revolution and poverty. Well-being was slowly restored by a democratic unification of Switzerland. The Alps took on a romantic tourist glow in the Edwardian age and after the disruptions of two world wars the highland farmers and guest house keeps began to prosper.

Revisado: 01-13-22
Disappointing. Narration sounded like a non-native speaker, over pronouncing some words and completely mispronouncing others.
Interesting content, but some major slip-ups concerning things I do know make me wonder about the accuracy of things I knew less well, "The American invasion of France in 1944"? Really? Major loss of credibility with that statement.
