Fantastic Story!
Revisado: 10-11-24
I really enjoyed this story and wow the narration was incredible! There is deep character development of Farah, the main character. The story centers on Farah's commitment and love of her family, her bravery and self sacrifice for the preservation of their well being, the commitment she has to fulfilling her promises, and the struggles she has to cleverly overcome. There were many funny parts especially between she and Lucian that had me laughing. Okay, there is a sex scene but come on it doesn't happen until you are deep into the book at chapter 27... it really wasn't what this book was about despite some of the other reviews harping on that. It's a story about resilience and love! Would def recommend

Historia
In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian-American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food.

Lovely
Revisado: 09-04-24
I loved to listen to Michelle Zauner narrate this powerful memoir. It was moving to learn her story, her relationship with her mother, her love for her mother, Korea, food, and music. Reading about her mother's battle with cancer was emotional. Michelle's love for her mother pours out from these pages and it was special to read.

Great Read!
Revisado: 07-15-23
I absolutely love stories that have 2 characters' separate stories and potential for their encounter/overlap. Both of these characters had many strengths and deep relationships with others that drew me in. The challenges they faced were significant along with how they tried to overcome while existing in a period of heightened racism and hate. Excellent narration - Great read!

Historia
Born on a plantation in Charles City, Virginia, Pheby Delores Brown has lived a relatively sheltered life. Shielded by her mother’s position as the estate’s medicine woman and cherished by the Master’s sister, she is set apart from the others on the plantation, belonging to neither world. She’d been promised freedom on her eighteenth birthday, but instead of the idyllic life she imagined with her true love, Essex Henry, Pheby is forced to leave the only home she has ever known. She unexpectedly finds herself thrust into the bowels of slavery at the infamous Devil’s Half Acre.

Powerful Story
Revisado: 07-15-23
Wow, this story definitely pulled me in. I loved getting to know the main character, Febe, and her relationships with others. This story had so many twists and turns that I didn't anticipate. It kept me surprised and constantly rooting for Febe and other characters to escape, obtain freedom, peace, and justice. My heart ached following what Febe and others had to endure in the relentless brutality of slavery. This was a powerful read!

Historia
April 16th, the year is 1963. Birmingham, Alabama, has had a spring of nonviolent protests known as the Birmingham Campaign, seeking to draw attention to the segregation against Blacks by the city government and downtown retailers. The organizers longed to create a nonviolent tension so severe that the powers that be would be forced to address the rampant racism head on. Recently arrested was Martin Luther King, Jr.... It is there in that jail cell that he writes this letter; on the margins of a newspaper he pens this defense of nonviolence against segregation.

Historia
There may be no tidy solutions or pithy answers to life’s big challenges, but Michelle Obama believes that we can all locate and lean on a set of tools to help us better navigate change and remain steady within flux. In The Light We Carry, she opens a frank and honest dialogue with listeners, considering the questions many of us wrestle with: How do we build enduring and honest relationships? How can we discover strength and community inside our differences? What tools do we use to address feelings of self-doubt or helplessness? What do we do when it all starts to feel like too much?

Great Read!
Revisado: 04-30-23
I'm so grateful that the First Lady Michelle Obama continues to share her story with us. I loved her first book and this one is a great read as well. I appreciate the stories she weaves in about her family, experiences in America as a double minority, and details her passions and professional journey. She reminds us of the power we all have to make change, the importance of doing the work - showing up to vote, the impact of gladness not only for ourselves but how it positively impacts others we may not even know. Her book is encouraging especially as so much in our world is uncertain, feels frustrating and unstable. She urges us to keep going, to stay focused, and to commit to still going high and explains what that means exactly in a troubled time.

Powerful Memoir of One Young Boy's Migration
Revisado: 01-16-23
Wow this was an incredibly powerful memoir of a young boy's migration from El Salvador to America. What a brave boy and what tremendous faith his family must have had that he'd arrive safely in this journey. It was enjoyable to get to know his character, those in his family and those he met or built relationships with on the long journey. So grateful for the author's narration and for his willingness to share his story with us.
There were times in this book that I laughed out loud, felt angry, felt scared or wanted to cry. I loved how the story is framed and told from the perspective and personality of a 9 year old boy.
This memoir is a story that is so relevant and represents 1 of the many many stories out there of adults, children and families seeking asylum or looking for a better life in this country. This story reminds the reader of the humanity of migrants who are so often criminalized by politicians in US media & policy. This story should be read by every American to awaken compassion and understanding for those risking their lives in search of peace, security, and safety in the US.

Historia
Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race”, a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of Black women and men - bodies exploited through slavery and segregation and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a Black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’ attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son.

A Powerful Read & So Needed
Revisado: 11-25-22
Toni Morrison called this required reading and I'd agree with her! This book lifts up the constant devaluing & destruction of black and brown bodies by American society. This book shares thoughts on how black and brown people need to be mindful of the safety and protection of their lives & their bodies. It calls attention to how although society created race, it is the black and brown community that came together to build a people and all the beauty and culture that is our people. Powerful narration and I love that it is written as a letter to his son with experiences, lessons, and warning relevant to us all.

Historia
To many in the age of Obama, America had succeeded in "going beyond race", putting the divisions of the past behind us. And then 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot by a wannabe cop in Florida; and then 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri; and then Baltimore blew up; and then gunfire shattered a prayer meeting at a church in Charleston, South Carolina. Suddenly the entire country awakened to a stark fact: Young Black men are an endangered species.

Powerful & Eye Opening Read
Revisado: 09-15-22
This was a powerful and eye opening read about systemic racism in America and how these systems and those who are supposed to protect the lives of all Americans continue to threaten the lives of black people, especially black men in America. It also looks at how the lack of availability of healthy food and poor food choices impacts the health of the black population. This is a read that sets fire to your heart and mind. It demands for change in America's systems and protection services to prevent the murder of another black person for no reason other than being black.
