Simple & Beautiful
Revisado: 02-27-23
A SIMPLY AND BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN STORY ABOUT THE COMPLEXITIES OF LIFE THAT LEAD US TO WHERE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE. ABOUT PERSEVERANCE, VULNERABILITY, AND THE VALUE OF TRUE COMMUNITY. ABOUT ALL THE WONDERFUL THINGS YOU FIND ON YOUR WAY TO FINDING YOURSELF. ABOUT OVERCOMING GRIEF, SELF DOUBT, AND LOSS. ABOUT TRUSTING YOUR OWN POWER TO CREATE THE LIFE YOU WANT AND BELIEVING YOU DESERVE IT, DESPITE WHAT OTHERS (OR EVEN YOUR OWN MIND) MIGHT TRY TO TELL YOU.

Great for early teens & YA readers
Revisado: 02-24-23
It's a super cute YA book/early teen book, so I'd give it a 4-star rating for that age-group and would definitely recommend for readers between the age of 11-14 (maybe even up to 16?). It's a cute story and well written for its target audience, but a bit juvenile for anyone beyond that audience, hence the 3-star rating.

10 hours I’ll never get back, and I still don’t know how it ends.
Revisado: 01-24-23
I was listening to the book on Audible and I couldn’t finish it. It was a 16 hour read but should have/could have been 10. I understand that it would take 16 hours to read what was written, but that’s the issue. The book should’ve been 2/3 as long as it actually was. And the story itself was average, at best. It felt like walking on a treadmill - you keep going but get nowhere. And the number of times they say “Cirque secret”… I understand it’s in the title, but oh my gosh. It’s like the author replaced all other “filler words” (eg: um, like, uhh, well) in character dialogue with “cirque secret”. 0/10 would recommend.

Historia
Two teenagers, a Greek Cypriot and a Turkish Cypriot, meet at a taverna on the island they both call home. In the taverna, hidden beneath garlands of garlic, chili peppers and creeping honeysuckle, Kostas and Defne grow in their forbidden love for each other. A fig tree stretches through a cavity in the roof, and this tree bears witness to their hushed, happy meetings and eventually, to their silent, surreptitious departures. The tree is there when war breaks out, when the capital is reduced to ashes and rubble, and when the teenagers vanish.

A 3 star ending to a 5 star story
Revisado: 06-19-22
I don’t have much to say about this book, but I felt compelled to explain my rating. I was absolutely entranced by this story to the very last word, but felt overwhelmingly let down by the ending. To me, there was no real resolution to any of the characters story lines and I was left wanting, waiting, wishing for it. One more chapter, an epilogue, SOMETHING! I felt throughout the entire store as if it was building to a grand revelation of sorts, and yet, it’s almost as it just trails off right before we reach it. Overall the storytelling is beautiful, and I loved the characters and the web of love and loss and connection they were building, but the ending was so underwhelming to me, it cost the book 2 stars :/
