I think I’m done with this series. The flashbacks are annoying and the MC is supposed to be reincarnated after a long life with all sorts of knowledge but can’t figure out the simplest things before getting slapped in the face with it. The voice used for him makes everything worse.

Blake never expected to meet beautiful women while studying archaeology — let alone a stunning Valkyrie. Dying was a bit of a bummer, but the chance to see Asgard with his own eyes was well worth it. Blake found himself one of the few, modern mortals found worthy of Valhalla, earning him the interest of the gorgeous battle maidens.

Too much time spent in the head of an adult MC with the mind of an angsty 15 year old.

MC sucks. He isn’t very bright and has no business being the MC in any story let alone one about being a god fighting for the future of everything.

Historia
Ard is hunkering down in the mountains for the winter as the war cools with the snow. That means it’s time to practice his magic and stay out of trouble. Well… Ard might not be entirely proficient at the last one. At the very least, he’s staying away from the city and his penchant for annoying other people. Except that doesn’t work out so well when he’s forced to attend a ball held by the Brighthavens, though they’ll certainly regret forcing Ard’s attendance.

Halfway through the book and at this point I really hope someone kills the MC. Don’t know if it’s the writing, narration or a combination of the two but it’s worse than nails on a chalkboard. The constant high pitched voice at every sarcastic attempt at humor really takes away from the story. I see absolutely zero character development from book 1 to this point. You can only say someone acts a certain way to protect themselves before it seems like that’s just their personality. I usually like the author and voice actors normally but for some reason this one is grating on my nerves…

While I like that the MC doesn’t mind dealing with those who need to be dealt with, I hate how this was written. The idea of killing all of all the lower level people, even those who were forced to participate and/or were sexually assaulted in the process, is questionable to me but I made it past that part. Then you simply compel the mastermind to not commit crimes? To make it worse none of the subordinates went after the MC, but the mastermind did. Yet they get to keep their power and position with a commitment to not harm the MC and his team? What about the regular people the MC was using to justify his crusade to begin with? Are they ok to harm? What about the lives of the supers who were doing wrong but may have been under duress, could they not have been compelled to not commit crimes or harm the “hero’s team”? This is worse than stories where everyone gets away with a slap on the wrist and the public is left in the dark. If anybody dies it should be the one at the top! I hate books where the villain is too powerful to kill because it would “destabilize everything”. I listen to and read books to escape reality, not to hear more about powerful people screwing over regular people and having their subordinates get punished while they just keep on keeping on. Makes me think of big bank execs and other ceos getting away Scott-free while everyone else suffers. I’m not even going to finish the book.

Author likes making unlikable contradictory MCs.
Revisado: 01-24-24
While I like the overall story it is so frustrating to listen to the MC in this book and others by this author. They are arrogant and think of themselves as above everyone else while constantly saying “I’m just a regular guy who wants to live my life”. “I don’t want to be a ruler and tell people what to” then “Hey Kings and Queens, you are all going to do what I tell you to do”. I know not every character is going to be the humble easy going type but I can’t stand the constant hypocrisy and contradictions.
It’s also frustrating that no conversation can happen without some type of long tangent. The guy spends longer talking about how he doesn’t have time to answer questions and explain something than he would just explaining the damn thing.

MC isn’t much.
Revisado: 03-07-23
Not sure why the author wants to write about a MC that is terrible at saving people. When it comes to this guy, If you’re not a hot monster girl you’re going to die. Children? They all die. Towns people? They all die. Everybody dies. The MC sucks. He can punch and head-but women but can’t seem to save anyone that he’s not banging. An entire town gets slaughtered, including children, and the few people who survive immediately want to have an orgy? Really!? WTF

He is a Master Enchanter, perhaps the last one alive. Determined to keep a promise, he crosses the continent to protect his dead friend's legacy: a crumbling orphanage run by a beautiful kitsune. He isn't a teacher, nor does he have experience with children. But with the love of a few good women, anything can become possible.

Frustrated and angry
Revisado: 09-29-22
It’s been a long time since an ending made me so angry and frustrated. I guess the author partially accomplished the goal of making me look forward to the next book, but I’m not sure if I will invest anymore of my time with this series. It’s obvious I’m invested in the story but I don’t pay for and spend time listening to books so I can be in a bad mood… just saying
Please don’t think I’m criticizing the authors writing talent. I really enjoyed this book and the previous one for the most part. I would even recommend the book, with a disclaimer, to anyone who asked about it. I’m just expressing my frustration with his decision to end things the way he did. In fact, my reaction probably speaks to his writing talent as he has sparked such strong emotion in me. I just wish it wasn’t anger, frustration, exasperation, and raised blood pressure.
