Historia
On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

Awful book, great narrators
Revisado: 04-21-25
To begin with, this wasn’t really a mystery and certainly doesn’t deserve any comparison to the mastery of Agatha Christie. This was a long and mostly boring slog through the sordid details of characters obsessed with themselves and their past bad decisions, contemplations of future bad decisions, and navel gazing unable to figure out why they are so miserable. To me it felt like the author was working to just throw in every sleazy thing she could think of that her characters could do or ponder and that made them shallow and unrealistic. Yuck. I did finish it because the narrators were excellent and I kept hoping for some redeeming value. But then, boom. It was over. I do not recommend.

Tough to listen to
Revisado: 03-11-25
Excellent story as all the previous ones have been. We don’t share other reviewers’ complaints about the narrator’s accents but we struggled with the volume up and down, with some characters near shouting and most talking very softly as though to add some extra drama or something. Honestly I think my husband summed our feeling up well when in a burst of frustration he shouted at the Bluetooth speaker, “Quit whispering, d*mmit!”

My husband and I both enjoyed this book very much. The plot, characters, and narration are all fantastic. Nothing I could add will do it justice except to say that as soon as I post this review we will start the next book in the series.

Historia
Things have started to look up for Molly Sutton. Her new life in the French village of Castillac isn't as peaceful as she expected it to be, but maybe that could be a good thing. Turns out a little mystery, a little excitement - it gives a girl with imagination something to do besides obsess about croissants. After Molly stumbles on another dead body, our amateur detective wastes no time before eavesdropping and butting into conversations all over town, gathering as much information as she can on everyone.

Holes in the plot
Revisado: 01-25-25
I liked this story less than the first book in the series because besides the heroine being even more annoying than before, this time she also had an obnoxious, boy-crazy friend and there were places the plot made no sense or was just way too thin. I don’t want to give spoilers and it was not the worst mystery I’ve ever read, but in my opinion it really left a lot of questions and had dead ends and misdirections that were not satisfactorily explained. So it felt like the author just threw in this and that for no good reason.

Historia
Boston girl Molly Sutton moves to a small village in France to lick her wounds after a divorce. Castillac is charming, the croissants amazing, the wine delectable. Molly's new life is full of contentment, if a bit short on excitement. But then a girl goes missing...and Molly's world gets turned upside down. Truth be told, no one in the village feels safe. They struggle to believe such darkness could exist in a friendly village, where people spend most of their time thinking about nothing more frightening than what to have for lunch.

Decent story
Revisado: 01-23-25
On the whole I was not sorry I listened to this and I may try the next one. I like mysteries. I did not appreciate all the flashbacks and ‘foreshadowings’ that had no real place in the story. And I really could not particularly like this heroine. She was, for example, so affected by someone else’s grief and loss that she struggled to function and yet all she could think about was pastry and gossip. I hope the author’s depiction of her improves over time.
I thought the narration well done and I don’t understand other criticisms about the accent. This woman did very well with the French as well as with the few places that a French speaker was using English. I also truly appreciate a story so well read that a listener can differentiate between characters without the need for overdone “voices.”

How depressing
Revisado: 12-27-24
This was such an ugly, depressing tale I couldn’t finish it. What a waste! So much time was spent repeatedly detailing what awful people all the characters were and all the bad things that happened. The narrator did a good job on the dialogue for the most part but if I were transcribing the narrative every sentence must end with the last word in parentheses in size 4 font because they all dropped in volume and pitch to become a sort of raspy whisper. I finally gave up listening, went to Wikipedia to read the plot synopsis. It went pretty much as predicted. Yuck.

Good story
Revisado: 09-01-24
This was not the type of story I normally prefer (the ‘life and times of two women’) but I enjoyed it more than expected. It was well written and well read. I docked the story one star due to the over-emoting, especially at the ending, and that I did not enjoy hearing about 80 year olds having sex. The performances were great except for all the mouth noises that came through.

The plot with all the added peripheral characters was a bit too complex and contrived for me to enjoy it. But it was an extremely good performance by the narrator.

Best narrator ever
Revisado: 02-16-24
Like all Strike novels, this is an engaging mystery, and like several of them gets a bit too graphic about physical and sexual abuse for my taste. I also find in this and some previous Strike novels, the answers to the mystery feel contrived or pulled out of nowhere at the end. It’s not entirely implausible but also rather unsatisfying and a bit disappointing. That said, Robert Glenister is one of the best narrators out there. I never get tired of listening to him as he highlights all the different characters and is flawless in his presentation.
