Historia
From the best-selling author of Public Enemies and The Big Rich, an explosive account of the decade-long battle between the FBI and the homegrown revolutionary movements of the 1970s. The FBI combated these groups and others as nodes in a single revolutionary underground, dedicated to the violent overthrow of the American government. The FBI’s response to the leftist revolutionary counterculture has not been treated kindly by history, and in hindsight many of its efforts seem almost comically ineffectual, if not criminal in themselves.

Fascinating Story of Seventies Radicals
Revisado: 07-03-25
Bryan Burroughs’ narrative really held my attention. I can remember the events he describes but in an anecdotal fashion. He pulled together disparate events to create a big picture of extreme radical activity. For example, I was aware of a few bombing events, but had no idea how widespread they were. Living on the west coast, I had little understanding of Puerto Rican issues. This book filled in these gaps in my knowledge. The only criticism I have is that Burroughs’ disdain for some of his subjects shows through in a way that I didn’t find helpful to my understanding of their motivations.

Lunchtime on a Saturday, 1944: The Woolworths on Bexford High Street in South London receives a delivery of aluminum saucepans. A crowd gathers to see the first new metal in ages - after all, everything’s been melted down for the war effort. An instant later, the crowd is gone; incinerated. Lovely Listen
Revisado: 02-10-25
Light Perpetual was a little hard to get into. The opening chapter, with its technical description of a V-2 rocket explosion, was a little hard to follow. But the stories of the characters were developed with such care and compassion that I was more and more committed to them.
This novel has a meditative quality that may not be right for every reader, but I loved it. The narrator does a marvelous job with different voices and accents.

Historia
In June, 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he has just served fifteen months for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett's intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and head to California where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden's car.

Great Adventure Story
Revisado: 09-03-24
This tragicomic road trip story engaged my attention and kept it! Set in the first half of the 1950s, the story sheds light on the impact of the Depression and World War II. It’s also a story about the strengths and weaknesses of heroes.
The voice performances are excellent. I don’t think I would have enjoyed Billy and other quirky characters as much if I had simply read the book in print form.

Gripping Story
Revisado: 08-26-24
This novel recreates New York in the Depression and years of World War II. Jennifer Egan loads the story with gangsters, immigrants of all kinds, war workers, and nightclub patrons. Her story builds slowly, but once it has enough momentum, it is riveting. I was sorry when it ended.

Historia
It’s 1951 in Blowing Rock, North Carolina. Blackburn Gant, his life irrevocably altered by a childhood case of polio, seems condemned to spend his life among the dead as the sole caretaker of a hilltop cemetery. It suits his withdrawn personality, and the inexplicable occurrences that happen from time to time rattle him less than interaction with the living. But when his best and only friend, the kind but impulsive Jacob Hampton, is conscripted to serve overseas, Blackburn is charged with caring for Jacob’s wife, Naomi, as well.

The Choices We Make
Revisado: 07-02-24
Excellent story of people making difficult choices in a mid-twentieth century rural town. The storytelling quickly pulled me in. Readers who enjoy the novels of Wendell Berry or William Kent Krueger might enjoy this one as well.

While the world seems to be in love with the idea of tiny houses and minimalism, many of us simply can't purge it all and start from nothing. Yet a home with too much stuff is difficult to maintain, so where do we begin? Add in paralyzing emotional attachments and constant life challenges, and it can feel almost impossible to make real decluttering progress.

In No Meat Required, author Alicia Kennedy chronicles the fascinating history of plant-based eating in the United States, from the early experiments in tempeh production undertaken by the Farm commune in the 70s to the vegan punk cafes and anarchist zines of the 90s to the chefs and food writers seeking to decolonize vegetarian food today.

What Is a Truly Sustainable Diet For Our Planet?
Revisado: 03-14-24
I appreciated the survey of vegan and vegetarian lifestyles in the U.S. over the past 50 to 60 years. Very interesting!
The author’s opposition to industrial agriculture may offend some readers. I do think she comes to a reasonable conclusion by advocating for more use of legumes, grains, and vegetables overall, but not total vegetarianism.
If you have read Diet For A Small Planet, this book will probably interest you.

Historia
Jason Fitger is a beleaguered professor of creative writing and literature at Payne University, a small and not very distinguished liberal arts college in the midwest. His department is facing draconian cuts and squalid quarters, while one floor above them the Economics Department is getting lavishly remodeled offices. His once-promising writing career is in the doldrums, as is his romantic life, in part as the result of his unwise use of his private affairs for his novels.

My Late Father Would Have Laughed
Revisado: 02-07-24
My father was an English professor in a state university system. His accounts of academic office politics dovetailed perfectly with this story. If you don’t have experience with a similar bureaucracy, you might not find this story as entertainingly satiric as I did. I recommend this novel for fans of David Lodge and Alison Lurie.

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Great Story and Excellent Performance
Revisado: 09-29-23
This is a story for science fiction fans who like plenty of science included with their fiction. The story was engaging and left me with interesting ideas to ponder. I can’t listen to an audiobook if I don’t enjoy the performance. This performance was truly a pleasure.

Absorbing Listen
Revisado: 06-07-23
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this story. The various plot lines are deftly woven together. The narration held my interest. I appreciated learning a bit about the Turtle Mountain people in the 1950’s. I plan to find a physical copy of the book and review some sections.
