Historia
It is three in the morning when Bobby Western plunges from the Coast Guard tender into darkness. His dive light illuminates the sunken jet, nine bodies still buckled in their seats, hair floating, eyes devoid of speculation. Missing from the site are the pilot’s bag, the plane’s black box, and the tenth passenger. A collateral witness to machinations that can only bring him harm, Western is shadowed in body and spirit—by men with badges; by the ghost of his father, inventor of the bomb that melted glass and flesh in Hiroshima; and by his sister, the love and ruin of his soul.

Hard to follow
Revisado: 06-15-23
The plot was interesting enough but very loose in structure. I didn't like the narrators, especially the conversations between Alice and the boy.

Historia
Meet Rook. A middle-aged philosophy professor with a sarcastic sense of humour, an ongoing rivalry with his highly-strung colleague Jeremy, and a rocky relationship with his ex-wife. But he has far more pressing matters to attend to than domestic disputes and academic feuds. He moonlights as a private investigator. Armed with a quick, inquisitive mind, an arsenal of philosophic quotations and an addiction to fear, he is willing to embroil himself in any sticky situation which comes his way.

Very clever
Revisado: 05-12-21
It was an entertaining story derived from today's chaotic world: work place politics, prosperous gangsters, complicated family dramas, and etc.
I like the author's literary knowledge base and the clear construction of the story line. However the theme was a bit dark, the tone a bit cynic, and the treatment of Jeremy (the colleague) in the end was mean.
Overall a fun FREE book I enjoyed.

Historia
The nine-word clue was one of nine cryptic notes that had been sent to taunt Inspector Queen and his son Ellery nine days after the murder. Nino Importuna had been obsessed with the number. He had lived by it. Now the killer who brought a trio of gory deaths to Nino's ninth-floor penthouse at Number 99 East was camouflaging his identity in a jungle of nines - and daring Ellery to find him. The case was destined to be a dazzling contest of wits - to the ninth degree!

Couldn't finish the book
Revisado: 04-17-21
This was the first book from Ellery Queen I set out the try. I found myself trying hard to hold on to the story, not because of the suspense but of the lengthy dialogue among the characters. I'm a big fan of mystery genre, this book was just very hollow in every aspect.

Historia
Trusted by no one, trusting nobody, the Confidential Agent is sent to England. But before his mission has barely begun, he comes face to face with an agent from the other side. As the car he is driving is run down in the fog, a thought strikes him: "It isn't probable - not in England, but it seems to be true, nonetheless - they're going to kill me."

Lukewarm.
Revisado: 10-10-20
I love Graham Greene's work, and had read many of them over and over. However, this book just didn't get me excited. First, the background, the when where who was very vague. I like novels in this period because it explained and supported the characters' thoughts and actions, but I didn't feel it here. Also, towards the end, the bit of the love between the two main characters were awkward. Last and important, I didn't care for the narrator, whose reading was so flat that I couldn't bring myself to go over the book again, which I usually did before I decided whether or not I like the story.
