Historia
Late Revelations introduces a revolutionary model for understanding the creation of the gospels in the New Testament and beyond. Rather than viewing the gospels as static and finished works published at one time, this book proposes that the initial gospels were "waves" of rolling traditions—stories, teachings, and sayings that evolved within early Christian groups. These traditions were fluid and dynamic, initially lacking the apostolic authorship attributed to them by later generations.

David is a brave scholar not afraid to think in creative ways. Reminds me of Hector Avalos! Highly rec.

Did the early Christians believe their myths? Like most ancient—and modern—people, early Christians made efforts to present their myths in the most believable ways.

Very entertaining and informative, I love the way Litwa makes observations and brings up points most do not see. I've been reading Philosophy, History, and books on Christianity since the early 70's at GSU in ATL and I always learn new things from his work.

Historia
In this electrifying social and intellectual history, Paula Fredriksen answers the question of how Jewish missionaries ended up inaugurating a movement that would grow into the gentile church by reconstructing the life of the earliest Jerusalem community. As her account arcs from this group’s hopeful celebration of Passover with Jesus, through their bitter controversies that fragmented the movement’s midcentury missions, to the city’s fiery end in the Roman destruction of Jerusalem, she brings this vibrant apostolic community to life.

A book everyone interested in early Christianity should read - learned a great deal about how important Temple was even to Jews that might not have been happy with the leadership there...highly rec!

Historia
Jack Miles's book is a provocative and revisionary look at the life of Jesus, in which many of the most well-worn truths about Christ are recontextualized and revisited. It does not look for the historical Jesus, but takes the Gospels as the sole source about his life.

I also read his earlier book and think that one vastly superior. NT Jesus, viewed simply as the protagonist in a rich novel, as Miles does here, has many faults and flaws that are never even brought up or discussed here.
Instead we get a gloss of the protagonist. Ignoring most of the faults and flaws any objective reader can clearly see in the literary character of NT Jesus. For a look at this side of NT Jesus Miles mostly ignores I would suggest : The Bad Jesus - Hector Avalos
