Historia
Long before the "culture wars" usually associated with the rise of conservative politics, driven individuals funded think tanks, fought labor unions, and formed organizations to market their views. These nearly unknown, larger-than-life, and sometimes eccentric personalities - such as General Electric's zealous, silver-tongued Lemuel Ricketts Boulware and the self-described "revolutionary" Jasper Crane of DuPont - make for a fascinating, behind-the-scenes view of American history.

Just a verbal History book
Revisado: 04-12-24
This book more about capitalism and how companies worked to busy Unions and cut corners for profit. This book is now dated.

Historia
Are heaven and hell real places or states of consciousness? Or both? Are angels and demons real? Are they extraterrestrials we have mistaken as spiritual beings? Or is it the other way around and they are demons posing as extraterrestrials? Is the Earth hollow, and are there subterranean civilizations? Is paradise within or outside of our universe? Was there one original language shared by all humanity?

A different perspective that's refreshing
Revisado: 03-19-23
The author does a good job at using his passion to seek God through analyzing known works and providing what he considers his own perspective. I found many of his ideas worth entertaining and exploring.

A story frontwards and backwards
Revisado: 11-29-19
I love stories with a timeline that's nonlinear. It gives si much context to the characters when you learn about their actions before understanding who they are.

Space and time form the very fabric of the cosmos. Yet they remain among the most mysterious of concepts. Is space an entity? Why does time have a direction? Could the universe exist without space and time? Can we travel to the past?

Nothing new from "the elegant universe"
Revisado: 10-30-19
I am walking away from this audiobook not learning anything new or different from his earlier book "The Elegant Universe"; this audiobook could have been an add-on.

Our gut is almost as important to us as our brain, yet we know very little about how it works. Gut: The Inside Story is an entertaining, informative tour of the digestive system from the moment we raise a tasty morsel to our lips until the moment our body surrenders the remnants to the toilet bowl. No topic is too lowly for the author's wonder and admiration, from the careful choreography of breaking wind to the precise internal communication required for a cleansing vomit.

Good narrative; learned to adapt to narrator
Revisado: 08-07-19
I like the book, and I will listen to again in order to get a more comprehensive understanding of what's really in our gut but I walked away not completely sure I understand exactly how to be able to take care of my gut, or fully understanding standard practices for gut health. Initially, I was thrown off by the narrator's English accent, but I adapted my ears to her style.

Historia
Superintelligence asks the questions: What happens when machines surpass humans in general intelligence? Will artificial agents save or destroy us? Nick Bostrom lays the foundation for understanding the future of humanity and intelligent life. The human brain has some capabilities that the brains of other animals lack. It is to these distinctive capabilities that our species owes its dominant position. If machine brains surpassed human brains in general intelligence, then this new superintelligence could become extremely powerful - possibly beyond our control.

5 hours left and I couldn't take it anymore.
Revisado: 07-23-19
I hate not finishing books, regardless if I don't get anything out of it. This book was a difficult listen, from the poor casting choice of the narrator to simply not finding the value in the information. I gave it 3 stars because, although I didn't enjoy the narrator or the point of the book, Nick clearly put in the work to share his ideas to someone who will value it. It's just not me.

Historia
Already internationally acclaimed for his elegant, lucid writing on the most challenging notions in modern physics, Sean Carroll is emerging as one of the greatest humanist thinkers of his generation as he brings his extraordinary intellect to bear not only on the Higgs boson and extra dimensions but now also on our deepest personal questions. Where are we? Who are we? Are our emotions, our beliefs, and our hopes and dreams ultimately meaningless out there in the void?

good information but just not compelling
Revisado: 07-18-19
Overall, I think this audiobook is worth a listen. A lot of information I have heard before, and it was good to hear again however, I found myself just listening to get through the book because most of the information was not interesting enough. I will probably buy more of his books, I will just be mindful of what I by next

Historia
Human beings are primates, and primates are political animals. Our brains, therefore, are designed not just to hunt and gather but also to help us get ahead socially, often via deception and self-deception. But while we may be self-interested schemers, we benefit by pretending otherwise. The less we know about our own ugly motives, the better - and thus, we don't like to talk, or even think, about the extent of our selfishness. This is "the elephant in the brain".

Historia
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Very good approach to human behavior
Revisado: 04-14-19
Overall this is an audiobook worth listening to for a broad understanding of how mankind behaves in our quest for power and happiness. We love feeling valued, and we'll take any approaches to getting it. Greene does a good job at bringing these principles of our pursuit to power to our awareness.
