Historia
Between his work on the 2014 Audible Audiobook of the Year, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel, and his performance of Classic Love Poems, narrator Richard Armitage ( The Hobbit, Hannibal) has quickly become a listener favorite. Now, in this defining performance of Charles Dickens' classic David Copperfield, Armitage lends his unique voice and interpretation, truly inhabiting each character and bringing real energy to the life of one of Dickens' most famous characters.

It’s a classic for a reason! It’s wonderful!
Revisado: 02-28-25
Even though this book has been enjoyed by countless readers over the past several centuries… there can be no better way to experience it than by listening to this superb narration by Richard Armitage.
Characters and tempests alike are brought to life through his excellent diction and his smooth interpretations of accents and mannerisms.
Even though the story has wrapped up wonderfully, I am very sad to have it end. If you are looking for a book to engulf you and keep you engaged and you’re prepared to push away from the dock of the 21st century, here’s another book to sail away in.

Historia
Paul Bäumer is just 19 years old when he and his classmates enlist. They are Germany’s Iron Youth who enter the war with high ideals and leave it disillusioned or dead. As Paul struggles with the realities of the man he has become, and the world to which he must return, he is led like a ghost of his former self into the war’s final hours. All Quiet is one of the greatest war novels of all time, an eloquent expression of the futility, hopelessness and irreparable losses of war.

Amazing story rings true
Revisado: 02-06-25
This book should be required reading for every single human being in the world.
Its gripping story of what war on the front lines during World War I was really like… the boredom, the privation, the terror and the futility is so beautifully written that one is almost there with the soldiers.
It’s a classic for great reason. The narrator is wonderful too.

As her remains are bundled into oblivion, Cromwell breakfasts with the victors. The blacksmith’s son from Putney emerges from the spring’s bloodbath to continue his climb to power and wealth, while his formidable master, Henry VIII, settles to short-lived happiness with his third queen, Jane Seymour.

Perfection. Absolute perfection from the master writer!
Revisado: 12-04-24
I’m bereft that I finished this trilogy because I could have listened to it forever. Even though we all learned about Henry the eighth in school, nothing else could bring him to life and make 16th century England so real and so clear.
The spectacular narration is a great help in sorting out and keeping track of the myriad characters … bravo!
Bravo to a great writer and bravo to a great voicer of such a grand tale!
I was enthralled and I’m convinced that you will be too!

Though he battled for seven years to marry her, Henry is disenchanted with Anne Boleyn. She has failed to give him a son, and her sharp intelligence and audacious will alienate his old friends and the noble families of England. When the discarded Katherine dies in exile from the court, Anne stands starkly exposed, the focus of gossip and malice. At a word from Henry, Thomas Cromwell is ready to bring her down. Over three terrifying weeks, Anne is ensnared in a web of conspiracy, while the demure Jane Seymour stands waiting her turn for the poisoned wedding ring.

A Tale of Two Cities is one of Charles Dickens's most exciting novels. Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, it tells the story of a family threatened by the terrible events of the past. Doctor Manette was wrongly imprisoned in the Bastille for 18 years without trial by the aristocratic authorities.

Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

It transported me to another world and I can only give this version my wholehearted recommendation and my thanks for leading me on such a delightful sojourn through the adventures of Mr. Baggins.

Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

Heart pounding excitement taken from actual contemporary accounts, compiled by a master of the written word
Revisado: 07-21-24
I hated to see this end. I could not “put it down “ as we say about a physical book because it carried me into and along with the various actual people who were living through these events. Taken from diaries, letters and other historical documents … the author catapulted the accounts into an exciting and uber interesting book about the beginnings of the civil war.
Even though I knew what the actual history was… I couldn’t stop listening to find out what would happen next.
Great writing and great narrator too.
Whew! What an incredible ride!

The hero of John Kennedy Toole's incomparable, Pultizer Prize–winning comic classic is one Ignatius J. Reilly, an obese, self-absorbed, hapless Don Quixote of the French Quarter, whose half-hearted attempts at employment lead to a series of wacky adventures among the lower denizens of New Orleans.

Best narrator ever! Raucous, and a little raunchy with a set of unforgettable characters who are all “characters“
Revisado: 07-04-24
It’s silly, disturbing and disturbed. Each character is weirder and wilder than the others but somehow they all become beloved (or tolerated) oddballs… like your ancient auntie who’s a little off her rocker but who means well and you can’t not keep inviting to big family gatherings.
The plot is implausible and crazy but somehow gives you the flavor of life in New Orleans… sprinkled with truth, lies, misconceptions with a little dose of narcissism added for spiciness.
Just drop any thoughts of believing that you are in the land of the sane and go along for the ride. Satisfying ending.
Definitely fits the genre of experimental fiction and hysterical realism.
I’d listen again just for the incredible narration that brings each person to life in the very best possible way.

Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

Wonderful narration and interesting structure
Revisado: 06-30-24
Overall, my thoughts are positive. However, I was not captivated by the individual parts which wrap up at the end. I was mostly bored and wanted to get through it so I could find out if it really wove together.
So.. a good read but maybe not a great one. I sometimes find that I don’t absolutely love books that have been awarded the Pulitzer Prize. I have such high expectations.
Trust is mildly entertaining.
