Very worth the technical glitches.
Revisado: 01-10-23
pros and cons:
Pro: As a physicist I was a bit leery on the premise for this novel, and I was pleasantly surprised. Not giving away any spoilers, but hang with this. It's a wonderful listen/read.
I did find this book during an audible sale, but would have paid full price. Definitely recommended if you like gritty science fiction heavily dosed with a modern age. (or gritty fiction, heavily dosed with science)
Con: every once in a while audible serves up a recording that's a bit glitchy. it only loses a fraction of a second here and there, and you can understand what's intended by context, but it does pull you out of the experience from time to time. The technical glitches are a bit worse at the beginning, don't worry they do get far less frequent. They pick up a little bit more at the very end, but by then you're so into the story it really doesn't matter. It wasn't bad enough for me to not enjoy the experience, but it made me a bit nervous during the first 20 or so minutes.
All in all, the pros certainly outweighed the cons in my opinion. I gave this book 5/5 because technical quality is not one of the metrics. ;-). The writing was superb, the narration was wonderful.

This was well worth the time. The authors have done an amazing job of collating millennia of data in a new light, and the narrator does a great job projecting the import of these findings.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Historia
Written in two parts, Triplanetary introduces the concept of two warring alien races: the Arisians and the Eddorians, whose battles on Earth are unknown to the human race, and in fact the humans are unaware that the Arisians have been secretly and selectively breeding the humans to use as weapons for these battles. From the time of Rome to World War II, the author takes the listener on a lightning-fast journey through Earth's history as the warzone for aliens.

Dated, but that's its charm.
Revisado: 11-08-20
Considering that this book was written before Sputnik and before transistors, it's astounding that E.E Smith managed what he did.
If you approach this like an old radio serial, you will not be disappointed. I think the Lensman can best be described as "Flash Gordon done right", or better yet "Flash Gordon written by someone intelligent."
But this is a product of the 50s, and although the author is obviously *extremely* enlightened for a denizen of that decade, there are a few cultural holdovers that might be troublesome for some readers. Nothing overt, nothing insultive, but I did roll my eyes at times at a few perspectives. Fortunately I never cringed. This is high praise; I cringe a lot. LOL
But in the end, this was a lot of fun. I had friends who read this back in high school, and I am truly disappointed I waited another 35 years before finally picking it up. This is a great example of a foundation of modern science fiction.

The subject line says it all. Winterfair Gifts truly showcases Bujold's narrative mastery, plus skillfully entwines a dozen+ novels in a 2+ hour window. My eyes watered far more than once, and that isn't an easy feat at any time.

Far more than I expected (and not just the 80+ hr)
Revisado: 07-02-18
Before I picked up this 80+ hour behemoth, I read a lot of reviews. Even the ones who claimed that it was substandard, said it was a great deal because they got 30 hours into an 80 hour series.
I'm going to go against half of this.
It's an amazing deal, even if you only get 30 hours into it... this is true.
But I'm going to go on record by saying that although this isn't A+ material, and I say that with all love because I really did enjoy this story, it averages at B+ (which isn't bad!)
Even better, that's an average. It does start off a bit awkward (but better than a lot of other audio books I picked up over the years), it has a small slump, in my opinion, around the 30 hour mark, the last half (and this is a FORTY HOUR HALF) is white good.
The author is an amazing world builder, and his characters are truly worth rooting for... even the not-so-friendly ones. ;-)
The narrator put so much life into these characters, it's hard to believe it's actually one person playing all those voices. Every character is extraordinary individual, and the voice acting is incredible.
My advice to you:. Get this. If you stay for the whole 83 hours, you will agree with everything I said above. It was well worth the ride.
if you only get half way through, it's still the best deal for an audio book I've ever seen.
And if nothing else makes a difference, I have listened to well over 200 audio books in the past 5 years:. this is the very first review I've ever written. It mattered.
