Powerful story
Revisado: 05-25-22
This case was not complete at the time of the podcast, but nevertheless, it was pretty much finished and a good retelling.
one of the things I value about this series, are the issues that are highlighted , and the lobbying for changes to law, police procedures or whatever other matters are exposed by a particular case. In this case, it is Canada's history of ineffective handling of drunk driving incidents, which seems to favour the perpetrators. This case highlights the devastation suffered by victims and their loved ones, and caused a drive to have certain legal aspects changed.

Different from the usual true crime
Revisado: 04-05-22
I love Casefile podcasts already, and this is such an interesting spin off. This particular episode deals with an Australian federal police investigation into human trafficking of sex workers. It features first person input by the actual police officers, which adds an extra dimension to the production. This episode really gave me new insight into this horrible crime and made me think. I have always been in favour of legalising and regulating the sex trade and improving conditions for sex workers. This just confirmed my viewpoint and taught me more. I have to say that I find sentences for the abusers and exploiters to be way too low, considering the suffering caused, but was gratified to hear about how the AFP actually influenced the way the justice system handles these crimes.

great series
Revisado: 03-19-22
Pretty much all the stories are gripping and well rearched and written. I wasn't completely 'clicking' with the narrator at first, but after about 8 of the eps, he's really grown on me. Put it this way, I wouldn't want anyone else to take his place. I love that these cases are so varied: some well known, some not; some old, some nearly current, and are from varying periods and locations. My family emigrated to Australia, and listening to all the Australian cases has been a fascinating way to get to know the country better LOL.
All in all, I am hooked. I read, watch and listen to a lot of true crime books and podcasts/youtube channels. This is definitely top of the podcasts for me, and better than 90% of the youtube stuff. Good on ya, mates.

Loving this podcast. A must for any L Word fan
Revisado: 11-11-21
Love every minute of all the recap eps. The anecdotes, the analysis, the laughs, even when they're a little OTT or irritating (rarely!), are entertaining and insightful. Love Leisha and Kate and their friendship. They seem really down to earth whilst still being kinda glamorous. It's actually like being part of a conversation between dear friends who are super comfortable with each other and share a warm connection and spectacularly witty sense of humour.
Loving the other episodes too, though some are about topics I'm not that interested in, so I skip them and find one that catches my attention.

In Sons of Cain - a book that fills the gap between dry academic studies and sensationalized true crime - investigative historian Peter Vronsky examines our understanding of serial killing from its prehistoric anthropological evolutionary dimensions in the pre-civilization era (c. 15,000 BC) to today. Delving further back into human history and deeper into the human psyche than Serial Killers - Vronsky's 2004 book, which has been called "the definitive history of the phenomenon of serial murder" - he focuses strictly on sexual serial killers.

Revisado: 10-01-21
I loved this fascinating look at the main sexual psycopathic serial killers from the stone age through to the 70's/80's.
The author gives us fascinating insights into the individual, as well as the historical, social, political and cultural context which may have influenced them at the time. I found the theories on how WW2 may have helped to form the prolific number of killers in the 70s and 80s, thought provoking and astute. If the account sounds weighty and inaccessible, it certainly is not. I enjoyed this book thoroughly. The narrator deftly delivered just the right tone at the right time throughout.

Historia
In the early hours of 27th January 1996, after an evening spent celebrating at Club Bayview in the Perth suburb of Claremont, 18-year-old Sarah Spiers called a taxi to nearby Mosman Park. But when the cab arrived, she’d already gone. She was never seen again. Four months later, on 9th June 1996, 23-year-old Jane Rimmer disappeared from the same area, her body later found in bushland south of Perth. When the body of a third young woman, 27-year-old Ciara Glennon, was found north of the city, having vanished from Claremont in August 1997, it was clear a serial killer was on the loose.

Gripping book , excellent narration
Revisado: 09-11-21
I have never read an Australian true crime book, but now that I have finished this one, am keen to find more.
These murders were in the news recently since the trial only finished in 2020, providing a conclusion to the most expensive and protracted case in Australian history.
It was fascinating to gain an insight into how investigators dealt (or didn't deal) with sexual offences in the 80s and 90s, and how police corruption and or tunnel vision could prolong the suffering of victims, their families and those who were falsely accused. The role of the media in helping or hindering, was also effectively explored.
Apart from providing excellent commentary about the history of this case and the main players involved, the book teased out the mystery like a good crime thriller should. Bret Christian has been a journalist in Claremont throughout the entire period, and his passion for the case and those affected, is plain to see. I highly recommend this to any true crime fan who enjoys more than just a sensationalist story.

Written in a flowing narrative style, Kitty Genovese: A True Account of a Public Murder and its Private Consequences presents the story of the horrific and infamous murder of Kitty Genovese, a young woman stalked and stabbed on the street where she lived in Queens, New York in 1964. The case sparked national outrage when the New York Times revealed that dozens of witnesses had seen or heard the attacks on Kitty Genovese and her struggle to reach safety but had failed to come to her aid or even call police until after the killer had fled.

Excellent book
Revisado: 09-04-21
I thoroughly enjoyed this intelligent, gripping and well thought out book.
For those who are into true crime narratives that gallop along and don't go into too much social and philosophical analysis, this is not for you. But if you enjoy good true crime and also would appreciate an exploration of social and individual human behaviour, this is a MUST. I never knew this murder was at the heart of the development of the 'bystander effect' theories which are still very much in the news, as well as providing greater impetus for a more efficient and accessible system whereby police could be summoned in an emergency. Thus Kitty Genovese in a tragic way, gave her life for the benefit of generations to come.
I also appreciated the issues of gender violence and sexual orientation which came up, Kitty having been a lesbian at a time when homosexuality was not accepted. It was also clearly a time when sexual assaults on women were treated with nowhere near the severity they are now.
All in all a most enlightening and thought provoking book, written in an accessible style. Highly recommended.
