Very problematic gender dynamics
Male MC's response to female characters is unsophisticated chauvinism which does not match his history as an extremely successful undercover officer, and his character intro as an overall good guy

Story rises above the narration

Laurenston has a particular writing style. A grammar snob will likely have a hard time listening.

For long time fans, though, this is a nice start to a new series with cameos from some familiar characters.

I was excited to see a new narrator in the lineup... and her voice/narration is pleasant/fine... except when she attempts to differentiate voices/characters. These characterizations were annoying and distracting to the extreme.

And her accents are awful, and several of them are not true to the backstory (for example: Bo was raised in Maine.... so why the Russian accent? and Ric is from an extremely upper class background, so using a lower class "new yorker" accent for him does not match at all)

I noticed the next book in the series has another new narrator and I am grateful for that, as I would not have moved forward in the series if they had stuck with this same narrator.

This book and The Connected Child (Purvis) are my top 2 recommendations for foster and adoptive parents. (I'm a fost/adopt social worker.) We consistently get feedback about how helpful they are to the parents. Easy to read. Helpful to read over and over because you understand more/differently each time.

Raised by a veteran suffering with PTSD, some of the topics hit "home" with me in an uncomfortable way.
The MC was unique and had an interesting perspective.

Could function as "bibliotherapy" for many teens struggling with parental Mental Health/substance abuse issues.

I work in foster care and adoption.
Over 25% of Queer teens are forced out of their biological homes because of their gender expression, identity, or sexuality.
We will be using the opening internal monologue in training for potential Foster Parents to help them start to understand some kids' internal dialogue, in the hopes to find more affirming homes for this incredibly vulnerable population.
