Historia
Chuck Berry was a man of wild contradictions, whose motives and motivations were often shrouded in mystery. Throughout his life, Berry refused to shed light on either the mastery or the missteps, leaving the complexity that encapsulated his life and underscored his music largely unexplored—until now. In Chuck Berry, biographer RJ Smith crafts a comprehensive portrait of one of the great American entertainers, guitarists, and lyricists of the 20th century, bringing Chuck Berry to life in vivid detail.

If you’ve ever worked in a dinner restaurant or wondered what goes on in one… #READTHISBOOK
Revisado: 04-24-24
If you’ve ever worked in a dinner restaurant or wondered what goes on in one, you NEED to read this. This is a laugh out loud read from soup to nuts as the old timers say.
Most people are, at least, a little familiar with Anthony Bourdain’s pop culture patois and sardonic humor from his TV shows. This book is the father of all of that and doesn’t disappoint.
It is funny, poignant and, for those of his generation, a trip down memory lane.

Historia
From the glamorous to the entitled, from royalty to the financially ruined, everyone who wanted to be seen—or just to gawk—at the hottest restaurants in New York City came to places Michael Cecchi-Azzolina helped run. His phone number was passed around among those who wanted to curry favor, during the decades when restaurants replaced clubs and theater as, well, theater in the most visible, vibrant city in the world. Besides dropping us back into a vanished time, Your Table Is Ready takes us places we’d never be able to get into on our own.

Just a great, entertaining read
Revisado: 03-28-24
Everyone has restaurant experience, all as guests and many as staff. My 1st job as a teenager was at an upscale restaurant in our small suburban town. I worked there, off and on for a number of years at roughly the period Michael started his tenure.
While my experiences weren’t quite as exciting, I recognize much of the life he recounts. Brings back memories and was a very entertaining read.

MSNBC’s Mehdi Hasan isn’t one to avoid arguments. He relishes them as the lifeblood of democracy and the only surefire way to establish the truth. Arguments help us solve problems, uncover new ideas we might not have considered, and nudge our disagreements toward mutual understanding. A good argument, made in good faith, has intrinsic value—and can also simply be fun.

Great book if your goal is to improve your public speaking and formal debating skills.
His liberal inclination may twigger some maga snowfwakes though. (Fine for me because I’m politically liberal.)
Great instructions for speaking and debate though.

The man he knew as "Control" is dead, and the young Turks who forced him out now run the Circus. But George Smiley isn't quite ready for retirement-especially when a pretty, would-be defector surfaces with a shocking accusation: a Soviet mole has penetrated the highest level of British Intelligence. Relying only on his wits and a small, loyal cadre, Smiley recognizes the hand of Karla - his Moscow Centre nemesis - and sets a trap to catch the traitor.

Deep, almost bottomless in depth
Revisado: 03-06-23
Quite a deep and satisfying work. David Cornwell is (was) a masterful artist of immeasurable talent.
1st read this work in the late 1970’s, a couple of relaxations now come to mind in the more discerning light of the 2020’s:
1) DC was an unrepentant misogynist. All of his female characters are written as bubble headed ninnies with the morality of alley cats.
2) Likewise, he was a died in the wool racist. But his brand of racism includes caucasians who were unfortunate enough to not be British. If you were not born white, British and upper class… you’re a pathetic pos deserving of sympathy or respect.
Well, we must separate the art from the artist, otherwise, there would be precious little art left to enjoy.
Cheers friends…!

Historia
A very junior agent answers Vladimir's call, but it could have been the Chief of the Circus himself. No one at the British Secret Service considers the old spy to be anything except a senile has-been who can't give up the game - until he's shot in the face at point-blank range. Although George Smiley (code-name: Max) is officially retired, he's summoned to identify the body now bearing Moscow Centre's bloody imprimatur. As he works to unearth his friend's fatal secrets, Smiley heads inexorably toward one final reckoning.

Great Trilogy, flawed Author
Revisado: 03-05-23
Ok… this will be only my 2nd full reading of SP. The 1st time was close to 40 years ago when I was barely 20. I read it right after TTSS, the masterful 1st part of the Smiley Karla trilogy.
It wasn’t until last year, 2022, that I finally read the middle book, AHS. After that 1st read I decided I would re-read TT, then the other two in quick succession. So, I have just finished the trilogy with SP.
You might guess, that, I would be a fan of David Cornwell, and, you would be right.
He’s (was, that is) a tremendous writing talent and story creator with a sublime ability to turn words into memorable masterpieces.
Many of the phrases from both TTSS and SP have stuck with me for all these decades and have played some part in making me who I am today.
..but, as I read these books in recent days, a couple of notions come to mind that I missed back in the dark ages of the 70’s & 80’s:
1) What a flaming misogynist DC was. Yes, a lot of that can be attributed to his generation and his upbringing, but, it is what it is. He paints all of the women in his books, even his heroines, as silly, brainless nincompoops having the discretion of alley cats.
2)He’s a dyed in the wool racist. But his brand of racism extends to caucasians as well. Pretty much anyone who isn’t white, English, upper class is a pathetic POS worthy of pity at best but unworthy of respect regardless.
Well, we must separate the art from the artist… otherwise… there’d be precious little art in this world to enjoy.
Cheers…!

Historia
For the past twenty-five years, Margaret Atwood has written works of striking originality and imagination. In The Blind Assassin, she stretches the limits of her accomplishments as never before, creating a novel that is entertaining and profoundly serious. The novel opens with these simple, resonant words: "Ten days after the war ended, my sister drove a car off the bridge." They are spoken by Iris, whose terse account of her sister Laura's death in 1945 is followed by an inquest report proclaiming the death accidental.

Historia
Set in the 1860s, The Leopard tells the spellbinding story of a decadent, dying Sicilian aristocracy threatened by the approaching forces of democracy and revolution. The dramatic sweep and richness of observation, the seamless intertwining of public and private worlds, and the grasp of human frailty imbue The Leopard with its particular melancholy beauty and power, and place it among the greatest historical novels of our time

Seldom does a book have the impact of Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow. Since it was first published in 2010, it has been cited in judicial decisions and has been adopted in campus-wide and community-wide reads; it helped inspire the creation of the Marshall Project and the new $100 million Art for Justice Fund; it has been the winner of numerous prizes, including the prestigious NAACP Image Award; and it has spent nearly 250 weeks on the New York Times best seller list.

Eye opening.
Revisado: 08-06-20
This is a great, must read work. Michelle Alexander is a terrific writer and paints a vivid portrait of the history and the current state of how the US justice system stacks the cards against black & brown Americans. Police are key participants, but they are just the hard bottom of an entire system that fights against the welfare of black Americans: Police, District Attorneys, State Courts, Federal Courts, the US Supreme Court.
It’s eye opening. Much work needs to be done.
