Historia
From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.

Beautiful writing, lovely narration
Revisado: 12-28-22
This is a fascinating book, reflecting a stunning amount of research. The narration was perfect (and I rarely say that)

Historia
At 40, May Attaway is more at home with plants than people. Over the years, she's turned inward, finding pleasure in language, her work as a gardener, and keeping her neighbors at arm's length while keenly observing them. But when she is unexpectedly granted some leave from her job, May is inspired to reconnect with four once close friends. She knows they will never have a proper reunion, so she goes, one by one, to each of them. A student of the classics, May considers her journey a female Odyssey.

Beautiful story and narration
Revisado: 08-21-22
This is a lovely book, and I have to disagree with the reviews that criticize the narration. Emily Rankin is a perfect narrator for this precisely because she does not sound prickly, and so she is a great voice for the inner softness of May that is explored through the book.
I will listen to this multiple times I suspect!

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

Incredible story and top-notch narration
Revisado: 11-19-18
Bahni Turpin brings this incredible story to life in her trademark style. In doing so, she brought me to tears multiple times and made me laugh out loud, too.

Historia
Before Alex Marzano-Lesnevich begins a summer job at a law firm in Louisiana, working to help defend men accused of murder, they think their position is clear. The child of two lawyers, Alex is staunchly anti-death penalty. But the moment convicted murderer Ricky Langley’s face flashes on the screen as Alex reviews old tapes—the moment they hear him speak of his crimes—they are overcome with the feeling of wanting him to die. Shocked by their reaction, Alex digs deeper and deeper into the case.

Good writing, not great narrating
Revisado: 05-27-18
I thought the story was interesting and the writing was very good. I can see why some people thought the writing was a little much, but it didn’t bother me. I did not enjoy listening to the book, though, because although the author has a nice voice, she read the book not in sentences or even really clauses but in sections of three to six words, with the emphasis almost always on the last word. (Made up example, but like this: “I went inSIDE, and I saw my FATHER. He was quiET, drinking a CUP of cofFFEE”). It was grating after a while. Felt like I was at a poetry slam but without any poetry and for many many hours.
