Historia
When the legendary Frankish king and emperor Charlemagne died in 814 he left behind a dominion and a legacy unlike anything seen in Western Europe since the fall of Rome. Johannes Fried paints a compelling portrait of a devout ruler, a violent time, and a unified kingdom that deepens our understanding of the man often called the father of Europe.

The story
Revisado: 03-25-25
The recurring interruptions in the story for the author, and perhaps the narrator to impress us with their Latin fluency was a major distraction. I don’t speak Latin. I don’t know anyone who does it added. Nothing to the book in the future I will be careful to avoid.this particular distraction.

Horribly oberrated
Revisado: 02-25-23
Once every year or so I pick up a novel for the purpose of reminding my self why I almost always leave novels on the shelf where they belong. This much ballyhooed novel follows the general course that novels do: lots of screwing lots of naughty words and about half the time a suicide stone in near the end. Chewing gum fir the mind.

Historia
They call themselves the Brethren: three disgraced former judges doing time in a Florida federal prison. One was sent up for tax evasion. Another, for skimming bingo profits. And the third, for a career-ending drunken joyride. Meeting daily in the prison law library, taking exercise walks in their boxer shorts, these judges-turned-felons can reminisce about old court cases, dispense a little jailhouse justice, and contemplate where their lives went wrong.

Fiction is to literature as bubbgum is to nutrition. An improvident waste of time on par with watching Fox news.

Historia
In this myth-busting book, Daniel Lieberman, professor of human evolutionary biology at Harvard University and a pioneering researcher on the evolution of human physical activity, tells the story of how we never evolved to exercise - to do voluntary physical activity for the sake of health. Using his own research and experiences throughout the world, Lieberman recounts without jargon how and why humans evolved to walk, run, dig, and do other necessary and rewarding physical activities while avoiding needless exertion.

Just read it! It's an eye-opener! I wish the book had been available 30 years ago when I began to exercise seriously.

Historia
Darryl Sutorious was spellbound, convinced he'd found the perfect wife. But their honeymoon didn't last long. Beneath Dante Britteon's façade lurked a man-hater born as Della Faye Hall, whose four previous marriages had been spiked with butcher knives, pistols, vandalized houses, and a lover set on fire. By the time Darryl summoned the strength to demand out of the marriage, Della Faye was only too happy to oblige: with a bullet to the brain. Aphrodite Jones traces the intricate web of this fiendishly calculating sexual con artist.

Hard to believe That humans can be this flawed. An excellent job of reporting, Near ration, and just plain old story time. And in real life both the prosecution and defense lawyers did excellent jobs. I would recommend this book to a close friend.

Historia
As a teenager, Kate Harris realized that the career she craved - to be an explorer, equal parts swashbuckler and metaphysician - had gone extinct. From what she could tell of the world from small-town Ontario, the likes of Marco Polo and Magellan had mapped the whole earth; there was nothing left to be discovered. Looking beyond this planet, she decided to become a scientist and go to Mars. In between studying at Oxford and MIT, Harris set off by bicycle down the fabled Silk Road with her childhood friend Mel.

Historia
The Interpretation of Dreams is the book that Sigmund Freud considered his most important and that forever changed the way we think about our dreams. Here, Freud explained his discoveries about why we dream, what we dream, and what our dreams mean. In this groundbreaking work, Freud further demonstrated that it is in the treatment of abnormal mental states that dream analysis is the most valuable. He claimed that dreams not only reveal to us the cryptic mechanisms of phobias, obsessions, and delusions but also are the most potent weapon in the healing of them.

Booooooooring
Revisado: 06-06-12
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No. It blows
What was most disappointing about Sigmund Freud’s story?
The extensive passages in French and Latin.
Did Robert Whitfield do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Well, he reads Latin and French like nobody's business.
Do you think The Interpretation of Dreams needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Probably not by the author, since he's busy being dead.
Any additional comments?
Back to crotch novels for me.

Historia
Sarah Vowell's special brand of armchair history makes the bizarre and esoteric fascinatingly relevant and fun. She takes us from the modern-day reenactment of an Indian massacre to the Mohegan Sun casino, from old-timey Puritan poetry, where "righteousness" is rhymed with "wilderness," to a Mayflower-themed waterslide. Throughout, The Wordy Shipmates is rich in historical fact, humorous insight, and social commentary by one of America's most celebrated voices.
