Historia
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Nah
Revisado: 01-25-19
I am not sure why people love this.
It is much much slower and incredibly drawn out in places.
It is nothing at all like the Vampire Chronicles. This is closer to a love (porn) story, than it is a mystery or horror novel.
Think on that before you buy.
I won't finish the series. I'm sticking with vampires.

Historia
Struggling with working-mother guilt, Marlene Greene hopes a camping trip in the forest will provide quality time with her three young children - until they see fires in the distance, columns of smoke distorting the sweeping view. Overnight, all communication with the outside world is lost. Knowing something terrible has happened, Marlene suspects that the isolation of the remote campsite is all that's protecting her family. But the arrival of a lost boy reveals they are not alone in the woods, and as the unfolding disaster ravages the land, more youngsters seek refuge under her wing.

All around great story
Revisado: 10-23-18
While the story is very very good, the narrator adds whatever missing piece there might have been. She is outstanding.
There are flashes of dry humor which seem far more appropriate for a setting like this.
I recommend this to anyone who wants a fast moving (but shorter) disaster/post apocalyptic read.

Historia
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Don't get your hopes up.
Revisado: 09-14-18
The story is not as good as people think it is. If it wasn't for the HBO series, a person could be easily lost.
There is very little description of this "world." The listener is expected to just know its geography and architecture.
Some words and phrases are repeated a ridiculous amount of time. "Craven" is used probably 500 times a book.
"I has been said..." a couple hundred.
The narrator only uses 5 or 6 different voices and make some sound like a leprechaun. He also changes the character's voice from book to book.

Historia
Victoria McQueen has an uncanny knack for finding things: a misplaced bracelet, a missing photograph, answers to unanswerable questions. When she rides her bicycle over the rickety old covered bridge in the woods near her house, she always emerges in the places she needs to be. Vic doesn't tell anyone about her unusual ability, because she knows no one will believe her. She has trouble understanding it herself.

I don't know
Revisado: 05-13-18
The narrator is simply spectacular. I have listened to a couple of her readings before and get lost in the story. Honestly, I love how she reads longer books.
I would only use credits to get this book and that's if you can't find anything else.

The unimaginable has happened: the world has been plunged into all-out nuclear war. Sailing near the Arctic Circle, the USS Nathan James is relatively unscathed, but the future is grim and Captain Thomas is facing mutiny from the tattered remnants of his crew. With civilization in ruins, he urges those that remain - 152 men and 26 women - to pull together in search of land. Once they reach safety, however, the men and women on board realize that they are the earth's last remaining survivors.

Wonderful book, may not be for everyone.
Revisado: 04-20-18
This is not your typical end of the world book where the reader sits front row while all of society collapses.
It brings up philosophical questions more than anything.
It is well worth the read.

Terrible ending...
Revisado: 04-14-18
The ending dropped it from five stars to two. After investing all this time in the book, I didn't even listen to last the hour (it was that disappointing).

Heartbreaking and Powerful
Revisado: 12-24-16
I was looking for an end of the world book (which I got), but there is so much more. I, honestly, fell into that world and became invested in the characters. There are so many subtle back stories, it feels like these people are family. I am starting this over and listening again!!!

I think I would have loved this book had it not been for the first few chapters (unnecessary). It is pretty fast paced and keeps your attention.
