Historia
The "mutual friend" of this novel's title is John Harmon, a friend of Mr. Boffin and the Wilfers, who inherits a fortune on one condition: that he marry Bella Wilfer. He has never met the girl, has not been home in 14 years, and, in fact, is reported to have been murdered. This is not the case, however, and Harmon does return under the assumed name of John Rokesmith, secretary to Mr. Boffin, who is to inherit the money if Harmon does not return and fulfill his nuptial duties. This book, one of Dickens's finest in terms of characterization, features the spirited Bella Wilfer, the insolent...

The usual Dickens - wonderful!
Revisado: 09-24-03
I listened to this book ( same reader ) on cassetes before I discovered Audible. Trying to juggle more than twenty cassettes on the car seat was quite an experience. But the book made it all worth it. In the future, though, I'm glad to say my tiny little Otis will take the place of all those cassetes. Anyway - No one can create charactors like Dickens - not then and not now. A wonderful book and a very good reading.

Here's a question that may be on the mind of many an investor interested in the recent IPO of the Internet company, Ask Jeeves: Who is Jeeves? A butler by profession, Jeeves is the inimitable gentleman's gentleman. And no cause has ever been lost while Jeeves was around, and in this uproarious novel the mastermin

Historia
Ben-Hur could be said to be the first American blockbuster. When it was published in 1880, it sold over two-million copies and was translated into numerous languages. Wallace's original novel has been largely forgotten now, but as this reading shows, the story, together with the sweeping rhythm of the writer's prose, make it ideally suited to audio.

Use the sample
Revisado: 09-17-03
I always listen to the sample reading before downloading the book. I don't want any big surprises. I've come across some "big name" readers who, for one reason or another did not sound very good - so I didn't get those books. Try before you buy!
In the case of Ben Hur, ok, I'm from New England, so the slight Yankee accent was rather comforting. And, accent or not, I thought the reading itself was very well done and the book quite inspiring. A big "thumbs up" from me.

Historia
Sons and Lovers was the first of Lawrence's major works, and is still considered to be one of his best. The 1913 novel, partly autobiographical and set in the coalmining village of Bestwood, is notable for being the first English novel to be genuinely working-class in origin and focus.

Great book and good reading
Revisado: 09-17-03
It always amazes me that people can have such incredibly diverse opinions of the same book. You'd think good was good and bad was bad but... a guess a lot is in the eye ( or ear in this case ) of the beholder. Anyway, I totally agree with the last reviewer ("I believe the narrator's style and pacing works well") - the narrator was very laid back, but that's exactly what was needed. Overdramatizing would have ruined it. This is a reading not an overdone performance and, as such, it is done very well.
