Amazing Narrator and Heart Wrenching Story

There were times when I was listening to this book that I thought I hated it, but what was really happening was I was caught up in the story and feeling emotions: anger, frustration, sadness, anxiety. It’s a testament to the author and the narrator that I was so enthralled by this book that at times I would exclaim out loud while listening. What this family went through was at times very hard to listen to, but also an important reminder of what happens when greed subsumes human decency.

Sometimes Ponderous

I love Stephen King books and this one was ok but it could have been shorter. There were times when I spaced out because the writing was so verbose and didn’t really add anything to the story. The way the narrator read the characters made me envision them as old men but they are really middle aged. Don’t get me wrong, there’s definitely an interesting story here. It’s just kind of buried.

Extremely Excellent and Incredibly Interesting

Why did I wait so long to read/listen to this book? It was wonderfully performed and excellently written. I looked forward to driving so I could listen. I laughed and cried. There is so much going on in this book that I’m going to reread it.

Vaguely Interesting and Slightly Annoying

I wonder if the author wrote the protagonist to be as whiny as she came across when it was read by the narrator. It was hard to care for any of the people in the story, but maybe that was the point. The elderly being shut away in a home forgotten and no one cares.

Weird and Unsatisfying Story

Maybe I picked the wrong book because I’m not a slasher fan and it seems like you kind of need to be one to appreciate all of the references in this book. It also is written at a level maybe for teenagers? I felt like it would’ve been better as a short story, and I was just getting through it. I didn’t like the protagonist and I didn’t like the story, but it was written like a slasher, so no surprise there. If you’re really into slashers, and you can identify with troubled and naïve young person you’ll like this book.

Difficult and yet beautiful to listen to

Wow, what a crazy book! When I first started listening, I thought who would write a book with such simple dialogue where people speak but barely say anything? I kept listening as the story became more and more compelling and awesomely horrific. The writing is incredible. The way Cormac McCarthy writes is so descriptive and colorful. The narrator was amazing. After finishing this, I couldn’t stop thinking about it for days.

Kind of Boring

The format of this book made it difficult to listen to because at times it was monotonous. People telling their stories to an interviewer is hard to listen to for any length of time.

Interesting, funny and compelling

I love this book and couldn’t stop listening. The story was very well written and the narrator was awesome. There was only one part in the book that I thought got a little sappy but in it’s entirety it was very enjoyable. A credit well spent.

Underwhelming and slightly annoying

I wonder if I would have liked this book better if I had read it versus listening to it? Would the characters have seemed so annoying? Were they written that way or did the narrator make them sound annoying? It was hard to care for any of the characters - kind of like a bad movie with the female character falling while she’s trying to get away and then just lying there whimpering. They were all hopeless.

Confusing, disjointed and unsatisfying

I agree with some of the other reviewers - the book seems to be separate stories that are incomplete and strangely put together in this volume. It’s not clear why 80% of the book matters or relates to the core story. The core story is never fully realized, just sketched out. I was left feeling confused.
