I’m not sure what to do here. If you listened and enjoyed the first one, I don’t feel like I need to sell you very hard on this one. The characters you love from Hellbender—Doug, Bryce, Lulu, and Charlene—get into further misadventures, while I also expand on the lore from the first one. Are the people in charge really demons? What happened in the Last War? Well, there are more answers and more questions in the sequel—you know how it works.

It's ridiculous, but it's supposed to be!
Revisado: 10-06-23
I first heard of Frank Fleming through his connection with the Babylon Bee (we miss you and Ethan). So if you were reading the Bee a few years ago, you will recognize the style instantly. It's not a novel so much as a crazy romp through Weirdistan, in which Satan keeps showing up to cause trouble, and no one seems to be able to recognize him, even though he keeps telling them who he is and what he's doing. I would say chaos ensues, but ensuing implies that there is some scene in the book that isn't chaos to ensue from. Nope, not here.
This is a sequel, just in case you missed the first. There isn't a lot of exposition to catch up new readers, but it's not too hard to figure out the backstory. And because it's Frank Fleming, it's a comedy involving cataclysmic genocide, and somehow that works. Also, Cataclysmic Genocide would be a great name for a band.
Not super impressed with the reader. His voice and voices all came out fine, but his pacing is a bit slow, which is hard when comedy is all about...........timing. I turned the speed up to 1.2x, to give it more of the screwball rhythm it deserves.

Historia
Whether pondering black holes or predicting discoveries at CERN, physicists believe the best theories are beautiful, natural, and elegant, and this standard separates popular theories from disposable ones. This is why, Sabine Hossenfelder argues, we have not seen a major breakthrough in the foundations of physics for more than four decades. The belief in beauty has become so dogmatic that it now conflicts with scientific objectivity: Observation has been unable to confirm mindboggling theories, like supersymmetry or grand unification, invented by physicists based on aesthetic criteria.

Fascinating and Accessible
Revisado: 06-10-20
If you've ever wondered what is going on when you read articles about particle accelerators, dark matter, subatomic particles, and the like, this is a great place to start. I picked it up on a whim because it was on sale, and I'm extremely impressed. Sabine Hossenfelder explains the science behind quantum physics and particle physics in an accessible way... well, as accessible as it can be, given the material. Then, and more importantly, she shows just what we do know, and what we're guessing at, and why. I've always thought some of the theories of strings or dark energy seemed a bit contrived; she shows why that is, and what can be done about it.
This book is not at all anti-science. Rather, it is pro-rigorous science. She advocates for fearlessly accepting the conclusions to which the data point, no matter what it does to our pet theories or wishes.
Despite the title, there isn't too much math to follow here. What does come up is dealt with in a general way, so that it doesn't require visual aids, just an ability to follow the logic of the argument. That said, if you're looking for light reading that only needs half your attention, you would be wise to look elsewhere. It's tough in parts.
I wasn't too impressed with the reader. The delivery is very flat, which makes the author seem rather unsympathetic, makes her admittedly dry humor harder to catch, and gives so little variation to the voices that following dialogue is a chore. Still, she did a good job at pacing and handles technical jargon with ease.

Historia
As we all know, and as many of our well-established textbooks have argued for decades, the Inquisition was one of the most frightening and bloody chapters in Western history, Pope Pius XII was anti-Semitic and rightfully called "Hitler's Pope", the Dark Ages were a stunting of the progress of knowledge to be redeemed only by the secular spirit of the Enlightenment, and the religious Crusades were an early example of the rapacious Western thirst for riches and power. But what if these long-held beliefs were all wrong?

Fantastic work!
Revisado: 11-27-18
I purchased this not knowing it was written by a non-Catholic. That said, it is one of the best pieces of apologetics I have seen in years. The author is almost always correct in his understanding of Catholic teaching, cites a source for every argument he makes, and presents real arguments, not straw men, when he puts forth the opposition view. Rodney Stark also has a fine writing style, entertaining and engaging without descending to name-calling or cheap shots. He certainly doesn't white-wash the faults of Catholic clergy and laity, either. Bad behavior in all sides is freely admitted. Finally, the narrator is quite good. A reader for a work such as this takes on a serious responsibility; names and places from across Europe are referenced freely, and the reader does a great job, with a few minor missteps, of pronouncing them all properly.
This is one of the top audio books I have listened to so far, in terms of both quality and content. Anyone with an interest in intellectual honesty should consider this a must-read.
